Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think a huge part of how we got here is that voting in the U.S. is apparently rather inconvenient in a lot of states. Add that to the rather low confidence Americans tend to have in their government — helped in no small part by the mudslinging in this particular election cycle (nearly all of it from one side) — and we get low voter turnout. Both candidates this year got lower numbers of voters than their counterparts in the '08 and '12 elections.
I was able to vote for HRC rather easily even though I'm overseas, since it's pretty easy to register and vote by mail in California.
Disgusted, but not surprisedCalifornia is the largest single economic actor in the U.S., but its secession is no more realistic than Texas'.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Angelus, I would personally refrain from such sweeping "they" statements. Even if the majority are like that (which, if I'm honest, I can't really contest), I find it difficult to believe that those who live there are all like that. And at any rate, they are still Americans who have the right to have their voice heard.
Beliefs can change with time and effort (example: Glenn Beck).

A good deal - California as an independent country would be the 6th largest economy in the world IIRC. I don't like the idea though, not least of which is Texas v. White.
A much larger chunk of Cal's population (LA and vicinity) needs the Colorado - it is in current agreement
with a bunch of other states (AZ, NV, UT, CO, WY) on sharing it.
Oregon might have a little bit, but I think most of NorCal gets water from the Central Valley.
The damned queen and the relentless knight. If Cali went, Oregon and Washington might very well join it. Or break off with British Columbia and form Arcadia.
If Cali did manage to leave (it won't), The Democrats would never win the White House again.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Last page: Also, according to this article at least.
Trump supporters don't believe he means things literally. I.e. when he says "I am gonna build a wall and make them pay for it" they listen "I am gonna have a saner immigration policy"

"Please crush me with your heels Esdeath-sama!Personally, I voted Gary Johnson knowing he'd lose. I'm from Louisiana. I already knew who'd win the state. And I'm personally fine with Trump winning. The alternative could've been WWIII with Russia and no one would have wanted that. He won fair and square, and us Americans will need to live with the fact that Trump is now the president.
On those fires in the south I mentioned earlier, fucktards here in western NC are trying to burn leaves and shit after a ban was issued because "government ain't gone tell me what do" and are starting additional fires uncomfortably close to me.
Our minuscule firefighter force is stretched to the limit and there are multiple ones burning out of control.
My entire area has been advised to keep a bug out bag handy just in case things get hotter, so I may have to GTFO if the idiots continue.
Well, that is...something. South America had runs and runs with politicians who made outstanding promises while ignoring all the red flags about them. Look the mess we out ourselves in, the Kirchner couple in Argentina and Chavez in Venezuela are prime examples.
