Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A list of national security primers for the next administration.
I get the feeling there will be very few people in the cabinet who understand anything of this.

Fun fact: the 13th amendment (the one that outlaws slavery) makes an explicit and specific exception for convicts. ie, slavery is still legal as long as it's "punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted".

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. So, this happened in a suburb of Minneapolis.
They're not wasting any time, are they? TFE.
And speaking of Minnesota, this election is familiar to anyone from this state, because almost 20 years ago we elected Jesse Ventura, another outsider.
Difference is, I am far less repulsed by Ventura.

Net Neutrality may be in danger
I was so upset by the racists I completely forgot about this, ugh.
New Survey coming this weekend!I honestly saw a quote on Twitter that "slavery should be back". Why, just....why. It got a lot of retweets too.
It's already Day 3 (Technically Trump doesn't begin in Jan but still) and so many things are happening right now. Jesus, this guy is taking Ameria backwards and not forwards and he's not in the office yet!
I have to call out a sentiment I see on way too many other sites.
Understanding why Trump's supporters voted for Trump does not excuse any of their sentiments or actions. Empathy =/= sympathy. Understanding why people voted for Trump the way they did beyond "lol fucking racists" is key to rebuilding the Democratic party after this shitshow. And yes, that work starts now, not next year, and sure as hell not in 2020.
Yes, this election stings. Yes, it's going to sting in the future. But the best thing we can do for ourselves and the nation is keep our cool, and not let this shit tear us apart as a nation, because this sort of division is exactly what the alt-right wants to see right now.
Without net neutrality literally every streaming and gaming service will die and as much as I can't wait for all those /pol/ trump supporters to wake up and realize that they can no longer play online games and stream their precious anime... but it means I'm fucked too.
SOPA is going to be a thing too again and/or worse. The Information Age might as well be dead. Every single nightmare of the past is becoming reality.

No, the alt-right needs to burn. There are dissaffected Trump supporters who are decent people at heart, but the neo-Confederates, neo-Nazis, and twitter trolls need to be drummed out of society, isolated, branded and marginalized until they make a good faith effort of proving they can function in civilized society.
I getting the sinking feeling that Trump's term is going to end with him being forcibly removed from the White House by a mass mob, because the current riots right now will be nothing compared to the ones that will happen if net neutrality is removed.
Though hopefully public pressure will convince Republicans they're shooting themselves in the foot if they go through with it.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet Unless I grew it. In that case, throw it in the trash.Twitter: The damned place is synonymous with hate speech for a reason. Only reason I still bother with the site is KD Atherton.
And finding out where those porn bot pics were stolen from.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

I recall Huckabee back when he was still something suggesting conscripting the entire US prison population as a slave labor force.
