The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@M84

His Cabinet so far has been establishment GOP, his acceptance speech was considerably muted compared to his usual bombastic rhetoric which suggests the GOP's hand up his ass, his campaign website deleted the Muslim ban, and he's backtracked on his threats to pull US support from Seoul.

And can we stop with some of the alarmism here? As shitty as they are, Trump and the GOP know better than to revoke elections in the next two or four years. Doing so would face an armed insurrection from the rural white voters who got them in. They like having the illusion of control. Y'all need to simmer down.

What new things happened since I've been here last 9 hours ago? I hear unconfirmed talk about Trump already going back on one of his campaign promises.

He hasn't actually had a chance to do anything yet since, you know, not inaugurated, but his speech and website now pointedly fail to mention some of the things he'd promised.

According to the climate change thread, Trump picked a "climate skeptic" as future head of the EPA.

I hope he doesn't actually, it would be the key part of getting him out of the white house in 4 years.

[up][up] Climate change denial is hard-baked into the GOP as a whole. Nothing surprising there.

[up] I think the wall thing is gonna be a Catch-22 for him. He's already pushed too hard for it to just let it go and there's no excuse the GOP can concoct to convincingly blame the Democrats for it. And if he does go forward with it, the insane logistics would be enough to hopefully tank any chance for reelection.

Where I live would be underwater... the whole central valley of California would be. And that is the biggest agriculture counties in the nation.

Huh, I thought Gabbard was already elected a while back. Unless they mean this is the first time someone's swearing on a Bhagavad Gita. Another Indian American did get elected to the House though, Pramila Jayapal of Washington.

"The whole Central Valley" needs a lot more than mere global warming, seems like. A great part of it may, though.

[up][up][up]

I did some checking on Wikipedia, the article is wrong about Gabbard. She was first elected back in 2012 and has now been reelected twice. Also Mazie Hirono was elected to the Senate back in 2012, so she wasn't even up for reelection this year (that happens in 2018).

I actually had to check the date from the article to make sure it wasn't from 2012, but it says it was posted yesterday. Weird.

>wants to build a wall across the mexican border

>wants to cut corporate taxes

I wonder how exactly he's gonna pay for that without actually putting those corporate taxes UP. Even his own money probably wouldn't be enough to afford a decent wall that long, let alone any money from the pockets of your average citizen. And I bet he's thinking it's worth cutting back on healthcare just to use the money on that...

He's said multiple times that the Mexican government will pay for the wall.

At one point saying he'll stop any and all money transfers in and out of the US from anyone of Mexican descent until they do.

Oh really when?

The famous campaign line is that Mexico will pay for it. No explanation of how he could possibly convince them to, of course.

Dr-Khanakus Since: Sep, 2014

He's not gonna convince them. It'll be downright humiliating for them, and I don't see any reason why they'd go along with spending their own people's money for something he wants, regardless of any penalties Trump would impose on them, if he even has any real sway over the negotiation process.

Also, money is not real. They're what we use to measure what the actual economy is doing. Is he going to build the wall with mexican labor? No? Then the cost comes out of the US economy. Best case, it's kenyesian pit-digging - that is, it employs people who would otherwise be unemployed, which has good effects on the overall economy even if what they're doing is entirely useless.

-But really. ITS A FUCKING WALL. Iron curtain echos. Bad, bad sign for where the us is going.
