Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Myself and a few friends are already doing preliminary discussions of what we could do. Hasn't gone anywhere yet, and I'm not sure what a bunch of high schoolers on opposite ends of the country in blue-as-the-ocean-no-matter-what-happens states can really do.

I have nothing to say to you. Either put a civil tongue in your head or do not address me. I am not interested in your quote-unquote "tough love" tonight of all nights.
It doesn't have to be anything huge. Even just talking to a handful of misguided acquaintances can make a difference. It may seem inconsequential on the grand scale - but if a million white people each talk to one white friend and open their eyes about the current rise of hatred and white supremacy? Maybe, just maybe, the Democrats have a million more votes next time.
Now imagine if, of those million friends, each of them goes and repeats the process with one of their friends. Or two. Or three.
Bigotry has been tolerated for too long. And now, we have rewarded it with the highest office we are capable of giving. No more, I say. Everyone needs to start speaking out. If we all, every one of us, work together...maybe we can do something. I won't say that it will be okay, because I don't know that it will. But it does us no good to give up. Keep fighting. Keep hoping.

Tough love is overrated. And you seriously need to chill with the general rudeness and OTT "I hate America" schtick. It's like you're self-Flanderizing.

We all were. It was a devastating blow, and I think I'm still in shock. I'm so emotionally fragile right now, I literally broke down in tears in between my last post and this one, just from watching a video.
But we can't just waste all our time kicking ourselves over "should haves" and "what ifs." We need to look forward and resist. Bad things will happen. I think there is a terrifyingly real chance that terrible things will happen. And it is our duty, as Americans and as decent people, to fight those things every step of the way and do everything in our power to ensure that better times are ahead.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."A defining moment in all our lives will be when Trump is inaugurated. How we react to it, which will define us as human beings, will be something our children learn about, and their children, and our great-grandchildren. We will tell them stories of how a madman became our President, and we will say to them, "Never again!"
For right now, we are not Republicans. We are not Democrats. We are not pro-life or pro-choice. We are not illegal or legal immigrants. We are not homosexual or hetrosexual. We are not believers and non-believers. We are not even American or a foreign born citizen.
We are human beings. And we must stand firm in one thing: our belief in what is right!
Please allow me to introduce myself, I am a man of wealth and taste. Nice to meet you, hope you can guess my name.I hope this galvanizes more progressive minded people to take midterm elections more seriously. Assuming we will even have midterm elections — or any elections — in the future.
It is terrifying that "whether or not we will have elections in the future" is no longer certain.

Then that would leave us with President Pence.
I feel incredibly shitty for actually thinking that this might be the preferable outcome, knowing Pence's abhorrent views.

That's one of the big reasons 538 tended to give higher chances to Trump than any other model.

Just that Trump's potential cabinet picks are very much establishment GOP
.
What new things happened since I've been here last 9 hours ago? I hear unconfirmed talk about Trump already going back on one of his campaign promises.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

I think that if we want to have any hope of pulling through this, whenever it may happen, we need to have white people actively start dismantling the concept of white supremacy. Don't be ashamed - be determined. Do not give racism a pass. Do not give sexism a pass. Challenge it. Refuse to accept it. Teach people why it's wrong and vile and destructive beyond measure.
It's an ugly truth that white people who hold racist beliefs or condone said beliefs are more likely to listen to another white person than they are a person of color. And this is why white people need to start speaking out. Instead of being ashamed of your privilege, use it. Use it for good.
I tried to sleep. I couldn't. I'm still processing the horror that's happened to this nation, and terrified of the horrors that are yet to come. I feel so powerless. I feel like all I can do is try to get through this, but I don't know if it's going to end. I don't know if we're going to be okay.
