The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] De jure, yes. In practice, not unless the US actually admits fault, since it can veto via its security council position any resolution against it.

I also heard of protests at the University of Houston.

Is Houston considered that strong of a bastion of liberalism in Texas? I know Austin is.

Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.

For people on the fence about whether or not Pence will be the real power behind the Presidential seat, I just want to point out that Trump's son was going around to various picks for the Vice Presidential seat earlier this year and asking them if they'd like to be the most powerful Vice President in history. To me, that translates to being President de-facto.

[up][up][up] Colleges in general would be, plus even in Texas young voters really don't like Trump.

[up] The question is though whether he's saying that sincerely or whether he said that intending to lull the GOP brass into thinking they can control him.

On the other hand if it's the Trump son who took a photo of his ballot he might just be that dumb.

Cause its not like the House of Trump has a reputation for honesty and integrity.

I wonder how the Trump business empire will be managed?

[up]And there it is. We all knew which side was going to get violent first.

Yeah I don't see the gunman being caught and dealt with because the police are Trump's bedfellows.

The violent repression has started.

I don't think that the police are going to let shootings go unpunished, they have a vested interest in securing basic public order.

The Fraternal Order of Police adores Trump but that doesn't mean every individual cop is an Agent of Der Fuhrer's World Order. Someone just shot five children. Regardless of the protest context, that's a bipartisan issue. I'm sure they'll go after the guy.

The level of smug out of Hannity right now. And Gingrich. Who are calling for NOT moderation, naturally.

This is gonna be a repeat of Obama's first two years. Overreach and nailed in the midterms.

So, a friend of mine just text me about some people burning LGBTQ pride flags in NY.

Any of you guys heard something about it? Is this just made up?

I have not heard of any such thing yet.

@Shirna: That rather depends on what happens. Trump might get lucky, and see the ongoing crisis in Syria resolved, and successfully deescalate tensions with Russia.

It's also not something that would happen in New York city, or any part of southern NY. My state was among the ones Clinton won decisively, if that means anything.

There are bigots everywhere.

@Shrina, you sure about that? The Senate map for 2018 favors Republicans, because the Dems did well in red states thanks to Obama.

Trump will have to have negative effects on American society as a whole for the GOP to truly suffer in two years.

I don't think Asians are viewed as a threat, except for the ones over in China taking our jobs due to trade imbalance. It's the rapist/drug-dealing Mexicans, the terrorist Muslims, and the Where da White Women At? blacks that they're gunning for...

And, in the case Ace Of Spades is around to read this, you completely missed the points, every last one of them.

I don't expect Trump to make government more secular, I posted that he gave US, WE THE PEOPLE, the chance to make government more secular...okay, not in those exact words but do you get the point yet. It's on us to shift the topic from people to ideology and then link the ideology to the extremely similar one that's weighing down our political process.

I don't expect Donald Trump to micromanage public colleges and universities. I don't want freedom of speech taken away from students either. I know it wasn't you, Ace Of Spades, don't remember which one of you tried to attribute SJW to me, as that initialism is not something I make use of, but as far as I understand it, "social justice warriors" are campus protestors and those were not the people I was referring to at all. I was referring to teachers who are more interested in indoctrinating students than educating being allowed to run rampant in public colleges, I was talking about curriculum being changed to fit social political ideals more than teaching the subject most effectively. Most of the perpetrators are liberals and since conservatives are on the rise it's as good a time to reign them in as any.

The link in them, beyond both being opportunities the Donald Trump election afforded us, is that stripping religion of its sacred cow status in public discussion would double a fail safe from rightist proselytizing agenda filling any proverbial vacuum left by the curbing of the misguided leftist sentiment, leaving pretty much education, and I suppose, sports to reign. If the students, even teachers, want to get politically active, they can do that when class isn't in session.

And again, I'm not exactly happy about our President elect, about the loss of a mere two republican senate seats, religion isn't something I actually wanted to focus ob, but if racism is lemons, stronger secularism can be lemonade, and academic freedom is an issue I've been looking for new ways to settle. I don't expect Donald Trump's direct help with either, but do you really think the Klan was expecting direct assistance when they talked about their opportunities presented by his election? I don't believe in hell but I'll be damned if they're the only types finding opportunities to take.

So, basically, the US could've elected Hitler himself, and the UN could try to make any move against Hitler and he'd just go "I veto" and that'd be that.
