The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As long as Pence doesn't get to pass his "shock away the gay" and "Fetus deletus? Female jailitus" laws and motions. This shouldn't be that bad.

Unfortunately I don't think there's enough opposition at this point to prevent those from being instituted. LGBTQ+ people are probably gonna suffer a LOT of losses no matter the outcome exactly because of Pence.

Pence et co. being the shadow government behind Trump is a kind of upgrade, because better the devil you know than the devil you don't. But it's going to be a hard time for especially the LGBT community and everyone who is traditionally victims of the evangelicals. Hopefully though once the Democrats lick their wounds they can strategize for how to take the White House back and avoid another 2004 Kerry. We already know the GOP fights super dirty.

I don't think they will be able to pass those.

But god forbid, even if they did, doing so would have to ensure a democratic victory in 2020 because come fucking ON!

"The part of my soul that has stopped screaming now has a grotesque fascination wondering how Trump's supporters are going to convince themselves and each other how each failure or reneged promise is (insert scapegoat here)'s fault. "

It depende of what part of his fanbase you are talking: the deplorables or the delusionals?

the first one will support trump not matter what but I can see many resent him when the wall dosent show up or Muslim still being there, hell I can imagine some people saying he is just another establishment shill.

the second ones will dump him soon after the true Donald start showing(and he WILL show) they wanted change and get a orange child instead, there is not "But hilary!" this time.

I don't think it's wise to consider anything ensured. If I've learned anything from this election is never to take anything for granted. Fight tooth and nail and never be complacent.

The Obama coalition pretty much doesn't exist without the man on the ticket. That's one of the (many) disheartening things about this whole thing.

There's a campaign (no word on numbers yet) to convince some of the electoral college voters to either change their votes or abstain. It may not be feasible (and a situation in which neither candidate reaches 270 would result in the vote going to the House anyway), but can anyone tell me if this is actually... well, a thing that could happen?

It's been fun.

[up] It'd be the first time the Electoral College revolted against the President Elect. There's not precedent set for them to do that. That would anger all the Trump people and we'd definitely see bloodshed as a result.

It's theoretically possible, but would be unprecedented. In some states the electors would face a $1000 fine for doing so.

It would be a vote of no confidence, which would be a good thing. The House could vote someone who both sides could work with instead.

It would be good for the neither vote.

Its an absolute pipe dream though and never going to happen.

Given the House is GOP anyway I don't see how it would help except, as mentioned, give those who voted for Trump (for whatever reason) reason to be angry and rile support again.

Yeah, this whole "faithless electors" scheme seems like a bad idea. If Hillary wins in an electoral revolt, it's liable to leave her and the Democrats with too little public support to win the 2018 elections. Let's pick our battles wisely, here.

Donald J. Trump is the First President Elect to not say God Bless America in his victory speech

Something about that fact, even though I'm an atheist, really really rubs me the wrong way, and I'm flummoxed as to why.

Getting Roe and Obergefell actually overturned is a tall order even in the next four years. Kennedy won't stand for either, and Roberts believes too much in the Supreme Court's institutional legitimacy (or what's left of it) to vote down either case just because of the prevailing political winds.

So that's something.

Even if it's a slim hope, even if it is a pipe dream, the electoral vote is literally the only thing standing between President-Elect Trump (I feel physically sick as I write those words) and the White House.

Hold on to hope. It may be the only thing that gets us through this.

[up][up][up][up] I think it's because of where it comes from, perhaps?

Trump doesn't have any values, whether they be religious ones, or otherwise. He doesn't believe in respect for institutions, traditions (good or bad), or anything or anyone.

[up] Most of us have already accepted it or are in the stages of accepting it. I don't think it's wise to hang onto a false hope and just foster more disappointment.

In the case of an electoral upset it's not going to give Clinton's regime any legitimacy. It's going to make it harder for Democrats to hold onto the White House in the future.

I don't know if "President trump" or "President-elect Trump" is worse. The latter at least puts something between "President" and "Trump", but it also reminds you that people actually elected him.

I'm banking my hopes more on the fact that he's about to go on trial for fraud than a slim chance of an electoral college upset. Because while that probably won't stop him being president, it does have a good chance of robbing him of a lot of legitimacy and giving the GOP an incentive to stand up to him.

Do note that Trump is only facing a civil case for fraud, he has not been charged with a criminal offense.
