The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also, regarding doomsaying about the GOP eliminating elections and the like: again, 2004. When George W. Bush was reelected, people were certain that he would use his power to abolish elections, eliminate terms of office, and make himself pope-king of the United States for life.

That didn't happen then. It won't happen now.

[up] Yes, but correct me if I'm wrong, didn't the house get hideously gerrymandered under Bush?

[up][up] I'm not sure it's impossible, and Trumpism-lite might looking start looking very appealing to certain democrats if the alternative is Bernie Sanders. It would parallel rather depressingly what happened in Germany when the center decided they preferred the Nazis over social-democrats gaining one inch.

I think another likely route is for the Democrats to emulate Sanders and focus on solving problems with economy. A lot of young people were for Bernie, white and otherwise.
This is the option that I think would be best, unfortunately minority rights are not particularly attractive to many white voters so they may have to come in second to economic issues.

[up] I believe it did.

Even the GOP isn't crazy enough to outright cancel elections. They use plenty of antidemocratic tactics, yes, but cancelling elections is asking for ARMED revolt.

Dubya isn't the same as Trump though. He may be a lot of things but I wouldn't hold him in the same contempt I would hold Trump.

I don't necessarily believe we're in for Dictator Trump but this is not the same, I don't think.

I don't think Trump is gonna declare himself dictator, but he's almost certain to be worse than Bush.

I said this before but the polling statistics with latinos and other minorities show that there is a big problem there that transcends racial boundaries if they voted for someone who actively insults them. I guess racism or economic concerns are stronger than sexism if Hillary struggled to get even 50% of the white woman vote.

Yeah there's no arguing there. Bush wasn't the brightest bulb, but he was sane and had actual policies.

Okay I'm going to move on from what I was talking about before both because I think I'm getting too confrontational and also because, well, Pykrete was making my point better than I was.

His idea is good though and I want to follow that train of thought. How can we actually put that into effect? We tend to just talk about theoretical stuff and not actually do anything and so nothing is going to change.

Ambar, I'm curious - I remember you saying that the white, working class rural type voter were essentially beneath your contempt because they accuse the government of abandoning them while simultaneously voting against (presumably democrat) policies or schemes that would benefit them. What were these, these efforts to help them that they refused?

@Pykrete: Trump apparently only won Texas by nine percent, which is uh... kind of a very slim margin for a Republican to win by. Time will tell if Democrats can keep that momentum going in this state. Remember, winner takes all is a thing in the Electoral College.

Which, Jesus, if we change anything let it be to get rid of fucking Winner Takes All in any part of the electoral process.

Here's the article on it.

I made a huge-ass post of silver linings:

If anything, trump now stopped things from completely going out in 2020 and screwing The House even worse than it already is.

The fact that he still couldn't get the popular vote, and that Arizona, Florida, and Georgia were close, and the fact that NC ended up as it did solely because of a drop-off, and the fact that Virginia and Nevada actually held. There's a perfect way around the Midwest via minority voters, but Hillary wasn't the type of candidate to pull it off, nor was Sanders.

Hillary's identity, Sander's rhetoric. That's the key.

Also expecting a 3rd term from Democrats has been folly since Humphrey anyway.

@Golden Kaos

Anything from welfare expansion to improved infrastructure. Republicans have dedicated themselves to cutting any and all improvements that the government might make in the lives of the rural poor, yet those very rural poor keep helping get them elected.

With Republicans strangling the budget, there's not much that can be done to help anybody, urban or rural.

"trumpism-lite might looking start looking very appealing to certain democrats if the alternative is Bernie Sanders"

I doubt it, trumpism only work if you have the outsider appeal and massive charm in your side and even them, Trump erratic behavior almost cost his the election.

So to make things sure, I will see a lot of political outsider trying to replicate a Trump, to be the "just a guy who will take the evil establishment" but is not going to work and I can almost see Donald childish behivor biting him in the ass

I mean, here's another thing though, somewhat cutting against the last thing I said: We have the Right to be Angry. At least today, we have that Right. Why should the pressure be on us to understand the opposition? They're the ones on top right now. If things had gone the other way... we would have been triumphant. We may have been mocking or dismissive. But we wouldn't have denied them at least one day to be angry. I'd liked to believe we'd started talking about how to help rural America- even if we'd frame in a 'how to make sure Trump never happens again' way.

But that's not the situation we're in. I'm pretty sure what we all want right now is some sign that the GOP will be magnanimous in victory. A sign that they're going to be protecting minorities or LGBT rights. But that's not what we're seeing. We're seeing them talk about taking away health care and reproductive rights.

So don't come at our lowest hour and ask us to be understanding. It's easy to preach compassion and unity from a position of security.

Now, I'm sure a lot of us are perfectly aware that the KKK and Neo-nazis are not populous. And of course we're aware that the coal mining towns are in a shitty situation. But we have the right to,at the very least, one day of anger when we just lost to a supervillain.
