Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Angelus Nox
Let's not give Milo any attention. He's a self-proclaimed gay Jewish Nazi who loves to brag about having sex with black men while simultaneously talking about them being inferior. He's so fake I'm sure his skin is plastic, such a colossal troll I'm amazed he doesn't live under the Brooklyn bridge.

Now's the power struggle, will the Alt Right manage to hold onto control of Trump or will the establishment Republicans put their dog on a leash.
The victory speech was an establishment Republican one, so it's looking that way right now.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWith hope, assuming Trump really is President Celebrity it is highly likely that we're going to be looking at Dubya 2.0, although potentially with setbacks for LGBT minorities, particularly trans people. However Society Has Marched On somewhat, so despite all the bigotry attitudes towards them are still better among younger redstaters than they used to be.

Here's the thing:
There's a lot of things you could call the people in Trump's cabinet but I don't think suicidal is one of them. They know the dangers he can bring if they just let him loose like a rabid dog, which is they need to keep him on a leash. Make him feel like he's in control while they make all the decisions.
Or in other words, they may hate them gays and them colored folk but they don't wanna give their dumbfuck buddy access to the nuke button. They don't need to use it.

You know what? I'm still pissed, for another reason:
Not to invoke Think of the Children! here, but the message to kids of this outcome is basically, "Whine and blame and insult others enough, and someday you'll become president." I can only imagine how uglier the playgrounds of America will be due to this.

You know, the votes for Trump don't mean that the voters liked everything about Trump, or agreed with everything he said. I continue to hear analysts saying "but how could they vote for him when the polls say they don't share his opinion on x, y, or z?" Obviously they must have voted for him for reasons a, b, and c rather than x, y , or z.
Assuming automatically that a Trump voter must be ignorant, or uneducated, or a bigot is just that, an assumption, and a baseless one at that.
My advice to all of you who can't believe he won is to find someone who voted for him and ask them why. And then - and here's the important bit - listen to them and try to understand their opinion. Maybe you'll admit they have a point or two, even if you don't agree with them on everything. Go outside of your normal circles if you have to, and certainly outside of this forum. You may learn a thing or two. More respect and tolerance for differing political opinions is something this country could use.
I'm not a Trump supporter, and I didn't vote for him. None of my family are Trump supporters either, but most of them did vote for him (or at least they said they would - I assume they carried through). My family aren't racists, and they aren't uneducated, and they aren't ignorant. They hated his anti-Muslim comments, thought his business practices smell fishy, and think his treatment of women is, in a word, deplorable. That didn't outweigh their reasons for voting for him.
Go ask some people. Not me - I concluded in the end that I couldn't vote for him - but go ask and try to understand.
Some people have noted what white rural voters were largely motivated by their dreadful conditions and the fact that things didn't appear to be looking up for them.
I'm not going to say that they don't have legitimate issues, but they are ignorant if they think that Trump will do anything to help them.
And here's another thing: at best, a person voting for Trump is ignorant to the dangers his presidency brings to the safety and civil rights of millions of minorities and the power they are giving to white supremacists and bigots everywhere.
If they still know that and voted for him anyway, then they are either bigots or being complicit with bigotry. There's no other way around it. It doesn't really matter how much they may hate Hillary because if she had won we wouldn't have to worry for the safety of millions of people in the way we do with Trump.

At least with the New Deal, the historical consensus does appear to be that it didn't help black people all that much in comparison to white people because FDR needed the southern white vote.

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.

Well, I officially joined a Tumblr curse against Trump and offered Cap's speech as energy for it.
Social media might be responsible for this mess, but it's also responsible for a lot of great things.
