Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's not like Hillary didn't have her share of relation problems. The crime bill, and the super predator comment followed her all throughout the debates. That and her prior opinion on being against gay rights being confirmed to still be where she stands in the emails.
And the superpredators crock comes up again. It was a pop psychology term from the time period people. St. Bernie called the same people sociopaths and wanted to ship radioactive waste to Latino towns that didn't want it. Not helping your case that Clinton was the problem.
Not to mention that there's a world of difference between anything Clinton's said or done and getting Steve Bannon to be your campaign chair.
Trump begins picking his cabinet.
Figures he'd pick Christie as his cabinet member.
I do wonder which way the Democratic realignment will go after this, it could either see a faltering-middle-class push to try and win back the Rust Belt that was lost this election or we could see a Democratic Southern strategy, where the Rural Southern vote is gone after. In the end Clinton did better in the South then Obama did.
I'd say that that argument will determine who runs in 2020, if it's the Rust Belt Strategy of a narrow win I can imagine us getting a north/north-eastern senator or governor. My throwing it out there list is, Booker (New Jersey senator), Dayton (Minnesota governor), Nixon (Missouri governor), Bullock (Montana governor), Cuomo (New York governor), Warren (Massachusetts senator). If the Dems go for a Democratic Southern Strategy my list is shorter, Hickenlooper (Colorado governor), Edwards (Louisiana governor) or someone new who takes a southern governorship in 2018 where a ton of term limited Republicans are standing down.

But if you are coming here and stating that the Democrats problem is for calling out racists and view Obama as some kind of white-hating Angry Black Man then yeah, guess what, you are racist.

In a surprising show of empathy and self-reflection Glenn Beck said he used to view present Obama that way and he's since apologized and said that he regretted it. He also said Trump was unhinged and not somebody you should support.
I like to think there might be more Glenn Becks out there, somewhere. Not necessarily in the big celebrity sense, just people who surprise you with how they change.

Mhm. Glenn Beck came across to me as having a great big My God, What Have I Done? moment. It's kind of shame he probably doesn't have much audience left now- the left isn't going to forget everything he said up until this point, and the right... well, if there remains significant anti-Trump influence on the right, that's cause for celebration.

Depends, has he got control of his twitter account back yet?
That's the test, if Trump gets his twitter back then he's on control and we may well see all our nightmares come true, but if even after being made president-elect he's not allowed on Twitter, then he's just a figurehead and we should worry about the Pence agenda.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThat Cracked article made me feel better.
The physical progress may be lost, but the attitude changes and strives we've made for equality won't go away. There's lots of good people out there who aren't going to just go away or change just because there's new management. We can fix this, and maybe next time, Democrats will be ready and earn the people's support.
Milo Yiannopoulos, the "alt right" icon at Breitbart banned by Twitter for leading an abuse campaign against "Saturday Night Live" cast member Leslie Jones, wandered through the media tents at the Hilton as Trump's upset victory was confirmed, taunting media outlets one by one.
"The effect of Trump is that everything becomes permissible," he said. "Dissidence and subversion and mischief and rudeness become OK again in public life. America has been moving away from that for 30 years and for the last 15 years it's been completely absent."
Asked by another NBC News reporter how to unite a divided country, he responded: "Who cares about the other half!"
Well fuck you too Milo, I guess you should be thrown to the neo-nazis you love so much

Wow, I never realized just how much it stung to go through a Hope Spot.
Disgusted, but not surprised
