Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

My hope is that today's more self-aware public and the internet won't take this lying down and we can vote to stop the government from ripping apart what the Democrats have struggled to reform. We can't go backwards now.
I can't stand to see all the good things the country's managed to work out over the last few years be torn apart by reductionist government.
If independents would've voted Democrat, this could've been averted perhaps. Not saying people don't have a right to not support a leader they don't care for, but a lesser evil is still a lesser evil. The enemy of my enemy, and so on.

Well, poll data suggests the rest of the youth demographic still tends Democrat.
Now, if the Democrats/alt-left could please just stop imitating this:
Yelling that you were 300% Bernie after the dust settles does not provide answers.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotI have every reason to panic. I'm a diabetic with insurance through the workplace, and after Trump repeals Obamacare, there won't be anything stopping insurance companies from refusing to cover me because it's a preexisting condition. I could very well not survive the first year of his presidency.
That's right, boys. Mondo cool. The kind of people who wouldn't vote for a 'socialist' based on that name tag are the same kind of people who would never have voted for Clinton in the first place. We win elections in the modern day by getting the would-be base enthusiastic by making them feel like their politicians represent their interests, not by swinging theoretically undecided voters who are bouncing between two identity extremes like ping pong balls. Upsetting people who hate you already literally doesn't matter, just look around you and see how much Trump cares about how much you hate him. If your solution to people not wanting to vote for you is to trash talk either them or the other guy, your campaign is dead and done.
The idea that the Democrats need to compromise and swing further towards rightwing policy, that that is why they lost, is probably the single most destructive response I could think of in the wake of this disaster. It's absolutely the leftwing equivalent of the GOP's well-publicized decision to ignore their own autopsy report's findings and double-down on things that were already hurting their party. Don't tell the Democrats to stick with SOP when those operating procedures just lost them every single branch of the governmental tree.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Sadly, the Trump campaign tactics succeeded on both sides
of the Pond.
I have to admit that part of me is (morbidly) curious to see how Trump handles a presidency because it will not be anything like running a business and several of his interviews indicated he doesn't have a clue how either governments or reality seem to work. I guess we'll get see how much of the real work gets done by Pence.
One thing we've been curious about over here - he was recently found guilty of illegal labour practices, wasn't he? And he's got both sexual harassment cases and fraud cases coming up?
How does that work when the person being taken to court is a president or president-elect?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. As someone living in a state with only around 3 million people, I thank God every election for the Electoral College. Otherwise my vote would be even more meaningless. True, it's not very significant as it is, but this time my state (Utah) did get quite a bit more focus from the candidates than last time. It helped that we are a conservative state but were so obviously anti-Trump.
Turns out most of us were more afraid of Hillary than disapproving of Trump, apparently.

I mean, Hillary was good at making Trump look dumb. Bernie would have been too. Anyone would have really. Not difficult.
Trump's success with Hillary was in calling her corrupt and dishonest. And bringing up scandal after scandal.
Like, not a lot of voters have said a damned thing about Hillary's economic policies. That does not seem to have been the issue with anyone but the people who were already on the right. And even some right-wingers expressed a preference for Bernie over Hillary early on, because of how much they disliked her to begin with.
The republican media did a good job of making people dislike her.
I doubt that there is actually something sufficiently abhorrent that can be done to result in an instant ejection from the Presidency, though. Best to pick some other tactic.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotOne of Clinton's problems was that she didn't have an overall objective / message to send, beyond just heckling the opposition. Trump did his share of mudslinging too, but he had a message. "The establishment is rotten, and I can change it". It doesn't matter that he won't. Obama didn't keep all his original promises either, but it was his message that won.

Youth vote? Most probably. They don't hold much traction in the older demographics.
