Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I mean, they've been calling Obama a socialist for years and lost both times.
I'm not sure to what extent anyone would care.
I feel like the idea that the Democratic party wasn't far enough to the right is really dangerous and misguided. And, well. Wrong.
If there's a guide out there on how to "Not Make An Avowed Socialist In the American Political System Look Like A Tankie In The Post-Fact Age", I'd love some excerpts. No, really, I would, especially as it would come in handy here in Malaysia.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotI mean, when the Republican nominee is talking about how great Russia is, I'm not sure to what extent people care about the cold war anymore.
Obama talked about spreading the wealth around and won both of his elections because he was charismatic and people saw him as sincere and inspirational.

I don't care how much you hate Clinton—if you'll take Trump, your opinion scares me.
Russia isn't Communist anymore. It's a hard-right dictatorship run on homophobia. They love it for that reason.

Yeah, but Obama never called himself a socialist. The people who called him that looked like wild-eyed shrill voiced conspiracy theorists.
Ambar, we've had our grievances in the past. Those grievances are now firmly in the past. Thank you.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youSo they can call us commies, socialists, feminazis, baby killers, cucks, social justice warriors, and traitors? But Heaven forbid we name call them?
They can whine about how they're being ignored? But if minorities and women whine about it, the same ones will tell them shut up?
Yeah, no. I'm tired of coddling them. Unless they're that delusional years from now, they're gonna get a real wake up call once they learn that Trump will do two things for them: Jack and shit.
The Birther and the "Obama is a secret Muslim" movements also helped the Reps look like a bunch of morons when Obama was running for office.
Well, don't matter at which angle you look at, the Middle East is going to be FUBAR
I am just waiting to see how the US/Saudi relations will be.

Inter arma enim silent legesWell fuck me, this really does look like America's brexit.
The youth vote (18-25) overwhelmingly supported Clinton.
May I ask who are "they" exactly?
"It is true that we are called a democracy, for the administration is in the hands of the many and not of the few."It doesn't matter who would have run against Trump. It really doesn't, because people would have fallen for his lies because they wanted to. The mob finally found a leader, and it became powerful enough to push him on the top. Trump didn't even have to convince people to vote for him, he only had to convince them to NOT vote for his opposition.
I mean, I know that the right likes to use "socialist" and the like as a scary buzzword, but I'm not sure to what extent it actually works, especially this year, when the political conversation is dominated not by the pros and cons of right and left wing economics, but by the corruption of and disillusionment with the political establishment, and the role of money in political campaigns.
Like, this election was not about the issues, or about policies.
That's the key: Bernie was good at getting people to vote who otherwise wouldn't have. I actually like Hillary, but she has not been good at courting enthusiasm.

Devastated and depressed. The deplorables won, evil triumphs at last, now twitter bullying will become normalized and Breitbart is the single most influential news organization in the country.
Pack it in, America's fucked until 2050 or so. Maybe i'll have time to get politically involved when i retire, if Trump's America allows any 99%er to retire.
