The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Devastated and depressed. The deplorables won, evil triumphs at last, now twitter bullying will become normalized and Breitbart is the single most influential news organization in the country.

Pack it in, America's fucked until 2050 or so. Maybe i'll have time to get politically involved when i retire, if Trump's America allows any 99%er to retire.

For the record, I didn't vote for Trump and I don't think he'll be a good president. I went third party this election

...but, I admit to being somewhat relieved that Clinton didn't win.

Yeah. Sure. But to be honest, I don't think that changed much. Trump's supporters were really never going to vote any other way. What we were hoping for was that there wouldn't be so damned many of them.
But maybe laying off the labels and appealing to their more agrarian-based grievances would've diverted just enough of those voters to tip the scales in Hil's favor.

The worst they had on Hillary was some damned emails. What do you think they would have done about a socialist?

I mean, they've been calling Obama a socialist for years and lost both times.

I'm not sure to what extent anyone would care.

I feel like the idea that the Democratic party wasn't far enough to the right is really dangerous and misguided. And, well. Wrong.

Yeah. I "love" how the one thing Trump supporters and Sanders supporters agree on here and elsewhere is that it was bad of Democrats to call out racists.

Can't call out the precious "white working class" after all.

@Bense, Obama didn't engage his opponents? What? Did you sleep through the last eight years? The Republicans shut Obama down before he suggested anything.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

If there's a guide out there on how to "Not Make An Avowed Socialist In the American Political System Look Like A Tankie In The Post-Fact Age", I'd love some excerpts. No, really, I would, especially as it would come in handy here in Malaysia.

I mean, when the Republican nominee is talking about how great Russia is, I'm not sure to what extent people care about the cold war anymore.

Obama talked about spreading the wealth around and won both of his elections because he was charismatic and people saw him as sincere and inspirational.

Yeah, but Obama never called himself a socialist. The people who called him that looked like wild-eyed shrill voiced conspiracy theorists.

So they can call us commies, socialists, feminazis, baby killers, cucks, social justice warriors, and traitors? But Heaven forbid we name call them?

They can whine about how they're being ignored? But if minorities and women whine about it, the same ones will tell them shut up?

Yeah, no. I'm tired of coddling them. Unless they're that delusional years from now, they're gonna get a real wake up call once they learn that Trump will do two things for them: Jack and shit.

It doesn't matter who would have run against Trump. It really doesn't, because people would have fallen for his lies because they wanted to. The mob finally found a leader, and it became powerful enough to push him on the top. Trump didn't even have to convince people to vote for him, he only had to convince them to NOT vote for his opposition.

Think of it as a war of attrition. There's only so many times you can subvert their expectations before some of them (or maybe even more) existentially turn in on themselves.

I mean, I know that the right likes to use "socialist" and the like as a scary buzzword, but I'm not sure to what extent it actually works, especially this year, when the political conversation is dominated not by the pros and cons of right and left wing economics, but by the corruption of and disillusionment with the political establishment, and the role of money in political campaigns.

Like, this election was not about the issues, or about policies.

Trump didn't even have to convince people to vote for him, he only had to convince them to NOT vote for his opposition.

That's the key: Bernie was good at getting people to vote who otherwise wouldn't have. I actually like Hillary, but she has not been good at courting enthusiasm.

I mean, the Republicans constantly called Trump out in the primaries about how much of a not-conservative he was. He won anyway. People didn't care about his tax plan, (which he didn't have) they cared about how nobody owned him.
