Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Can he repeal the ACA? I thought you needed the senate for a repeal.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote? They're in for an extremely rough time, to put it mildly.
I don't know that legislation might pass in terms of fucking over Po C, but I'm fully expecting LGBTQ people to get fucked over regardless because of Pence.
We have a minority in both houses of Congress.
It's an uphill fight.
Though there is the bright side that Trump has personally offended many prominent figures in his new congress on the campaign trail.
Well see if their honor means anything these next few years.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youI think that all minorities are pretty much fucked right now, "model" (spits) or not.
My dad is from China. He's a legal immigrant who's lived here for most of his life. I don't think that matters to a man like Trump.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."If the Leave campaign has taught us anything...the word of a conservative politician is worthless. The GOP will largely go along with Trump.
Regarding minorities: police reform won't happen. I'm not sure about deportations, due to logistical issues. The wall is unlikely for the same reason. Voter suppression will increase dramatically.
LGBT Qetc: Can the SC reverse one of its own decisions? I'm pretty sure trans rights are shot for a generation at least. But gay marriage should be secure.
I doubt they'll set up literal concentration camps, but its going to be bad.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I think that Ryan and co will at least rein Trump in on taxes, economics and (probably) foreign policy.
I think the military industrial complex is terrified about Trump driving America's overseas buyers away. Big business may fear the mismanagement he could bring.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Amendments to the constitution can override SC decisions. As can a new SC decision.
Both are entirely possible under a Trump presidency; he has at least four, at most eight years to push such a motion. Or rather, Pence does.

IIRC: The nuclear option can only be implemented at the start of a session of Congress - essentially during the house keeping section where they all agree on the rules of how to conduct debates. Normally they just say "same as we did last time" - the nuclear option is "same as last time only no filibusters."
Agreeing the rules that the session will follow only requires 51 votes.
