Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Drake,
Has that ever happened in the last hundred years or so?
I mean, maybe if Trump proves, once and for all, that he is truly unfit for presidency. Considering everything he have done so far, one wonder what would that be. Then again, he is being investigated for child rape.

Mmm. I was just thinking that since some of Trump's wins are in solid-blue states and Hillary's won the popular vote, some electors might see it as a fluke.

Bad news: That accusation was dropped after multiple death threats to the plaintiff.
Even if that happens to every Trumper who thinks that Trump isn't acting on his promises as quickly as he claimed he could, that is still a massive setback to American civil society.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot![]()
FiveThirtyEight warned that Trump and Hillary were within polling errors of each other after the Comey revelation, so they're off the hook, at least.
I recall one case of fraud (over Trump U I think) that has the chance to stick, but given the confirmation of what your political climate is you'd need levels of vindictiveness from the prosecutor, judge and jury surpassing even that of Ruth Bader Ginsburg to get a conviction.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot@Gentlecoldafterdusk: I'm not an american and not as well-educated about the state of things as others, so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt, but I don't think legislation will pass to the extreme of forbidding women from getting education or a re-institution of slavery.
What IS very likely to happen however is an uptick in hate crimes and open bigotry, and the economy going down the shitter worldwide. Also, I'm fairly certain that legislation making things difficult for LGBTQ+ people is going to be instituted, not necessarily because of Trump, but because of his VP Pence.
I mean things COULD get EXTREMELY bad like nukes being used, concentration camps, etc, but I don't know that it will come to that.
So, I've come to accept the fact that the US just elected an internet troll as POTUS faster than I expected.
Last night also taught me that I'm prone to depressive drinking, so I think I'm going to stop drinking outright. Won't be easy with Trump in office, but I need to start taking better care of myself.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It's gotta be Warren. Admittedly, she's older than I thought (67) but she's in good health. And if she becomes the first female president instead of Hillary, that will be so sweet.
Because let's be real here. Hillary's most well known scandals were massively overblown or completely irrelevant, that's true. That doesn't mean she wasn't a terrible candidate. Her recorded comments about having differing public viewpoints and private viewpoints would have gotten me to at least abstain from voting in any other year. And it may not have been provable in a court of law, because the standards have been set ridiculously high, but it's pretty obvious that she was taking donations through the Clinton Foundation in exchange for political favors. And I just can't stand that after everything she and the DNC did in the primaries that she made zero honest outreach to the progressive wing of the party. Instead she hired trolls to attack us and acted like she was absolutely entitled to our votes no matter what.
So while most of me feels a deep seated terror and despair at the thought of the future, the vindictive part of me is just a tiny bit glad that it didn't pay off for her.

Even if you offed the entire chain of succession, there's no guarantee. So as I mentioned in a post that got thumped, I know it's cathartic, but it leads nowhere.

There's no requirement that any given cabinet have a member of the opposing party - that's just tradition. And given the kind of people who jumped on the Trump Train I have serious doubts this will continue after January 20.

The damned queen and the relentless knight. This was supposed to be the election that crippled the Republican party. Now they and their white nationalism are stronger than ever.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you@Montegoraon, I could make a big post about why none of that should matter, specifically your dubious "she obviously took bribes" point, but the sad fact of the matter is that it did matter to a lot people, a lot more than all of Trump's unarguably horrible points.

If the Electoral College did mutiny I can't image it going well for Hilary. The backlash on her would have to be enormous and it would probably up the chances of armed revolution.
