Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm just curious. Does that mean that: 1)Women's education and right to vote will be banned? 2)Blacks will become slaves again, like they were before Lincoln? 3)Same-sex marriage will be banned again, and LGBT people will be forcedly put in asylums and/or decapitated? 4)Being an atheist will become a federal crime? I'm not from America and I don't know your realities, so please, don't think that I'm mocking or having fun. I'm really curious and I'd like a serious answer. Thanks.
So I guess one thing we need to question is who we have left? Hillary was a major fixture of the Democrats but there's no way she can run again. Bernie and Warren are old and one of the other primary candidates are fit candidates. I guess there's Kaine but I doubt he'd do much better since he'll be associated with Hillary. Who runs in 2020? Who can stop this guy?
Question: exactly what steps does the US government and Supreme Court need to take to overturn Roe v. Wade and Obergefell v. Hodges? How likely is it?
I mean, they're probably going to enact legislation that will make getting abortions extremely difficult, and curtail LGBTQ rights, so even if they can't overturn those decisions they can effectively make people's lives hell, right?
Stuff like that needs to be re-examined by the Supreme Court, which means that it has to get back up to it in a court case. The thing about the Supreme Court is that if Trump misjudged, like if he picks his cousin (who hates him) the selected justice actually has no obligation to line up with him. They have the job for life, no matter what.
I think many of them will but it's also gonna depend on the degree of bad that will result.
Other people will just find something else to blame besides him though. Finding a scapegoat is the reason they elected him in the first place.
As I understand it, the electoral college hasn't actually voted yet. This election just informs them of who the people want them to vote for.
Is there any chance of an electoral fiat when the college comes together?
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

That will require making sure it is known to those who voted for him what he's done/failed to deliver (for real, mind you - I will not stoop to the Republicans' level of making shit up).
The damned queen and the relentless knight.
