The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

But I'll take opportunity where I can get it. We've got a President who attacked a religious group as part of his campaign platform. It shouldn't be too hard to turn that from people(Muslims), to religion(Islam), to proselytizing religion (which includes Christianity). He's laid the grounds for getting religion out of the legislative process, for a truer separation of church and state, should we move carefully from this set precedent.
Unfortunately, "doublethink" may come into play for that. Unless perhaps he focuses his concerns elsewhere right after doing what you said,

It just felt like all the 'controversies' surrounding Hillary were harmless mistakes or miscommunications manufactured to be significantly bigger than they actually were to hurt her campaign, especially the E-mail thing(s), while all the legal shitstorms surrounding Trump were somehow just ignored or brushed off by all authorities.

[up]That post was so twisty turvy I'm wondering if Indirect wasn't actively trying to confuse us about their point. The gist of it seems to be they want to get rid of religion and also get rid of people talking about religion in colleges. I wonder if they're aware that Pence is highly religious and likely to let that influence things.

Indirect: The Republicans are not going to enact a proper separation of church and state.

Get ready for a possible Christian theocracy.

And I don't think it's the religious left who are invading college campuses

Then that's even worse. Instead of it now being a final desperation attempt from the lower class, it's now the middle class who decided to screw themselves because.... they want to hate or something?
Well, about 50% of them, in any case (the rich too, probably because of the tax break thing). That's my one consolation, almost 60 million people decided not to support Trump. And yeah, I count third party voters and a lot of the people who didn't vote among the people who let him win.

I fully expect LGBTQ+ rights to take a massive beating thanks to Pence.

[up]I'm not sure if there's enough resources to support Americans in significant numbers. We've already got a housing price crisis on our hands. So unless the Americans all go to rural areas/the West (not BC)/Atlantic Canada....

Are people THAT spiteful towards annoying college aged girls that they're willing to ruin the country to stick it to them?

Was it really worth is?

To be quite honest, I understand where "you have the leaders you deserve" comes from but I don't think ANYONE deserves Trump. Certainly not America at large.

It's hard to believe that, just a few years ago, all I knew or cared to know about Donald Trump was "evil stupid businessman".

Regarding the questions about the electoral college, what practical steps would have to be taken to actually get rid of it? Like I said before, I don't think it's on many people's radar as a problem with the process. Add to that that currently the Republicans have benefited hugely from it and I don't see it getting gone in the next two years.

Yep. The next few years are probably gonna be rough too. We knew for a while it wasn't a coincidence that all these oppressive changes were popping up, but with the US it only becomes more obvious.

Brazil is likely to follow suit in our coming elections, bar a miracle. I'm sure Trump's rise has only emboldened our own racist and fascistic right-wing and I fully expect them to come into power. In some ways they have already.
