Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

About #Never Trumpers: Kasich will do a speech tomorrow, let's see what he does
.
To be honest, I don't really know how much hope I ever had on the climate front. In ten years, I've seen an awful lot of promises and very little action. Humanity simply doesn't want to accept the large scale changes that would needed. I'm going to keep trying, though.
Then that's even worse. Instead of it now being a final desperation attempt from the lower class, it's now the middle class who decided to screw themselves because.... they want to hate or something?

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youSo, apparently popular opinion in Canada doesn't favor fleeing Americans.
The True North will almost certainly see an uptink in anti American sentiment. Along with the rest of the world.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Remember how TV Tropes used to be criticized for allowing racist posts, but not allowing people to be too harsh when calling out said racist posts? Remember how resistive tropers were to that criticism of this site?
Yeah, for a while I thought it was one of the more flawed criticisms too, but in hindsight, I think that is our precursor to the "deplorables" controvery.
I said I wasn't going to get angry if Donald Trump won. I did more than I ever have to support Democrats, despite hating politicians, but now I kind of am because I realized, after voting, that my efforts were misdirected.
Get the vote out? To friends? Family, neighbors, the places I shop? Should have got the vote out in the work place. It turns out the one talking most consistently about the election is the only one(besides myself) voting. That the reason no one reacted to my completely non controversial comments on voting to fix roads is because none of them even knew the ballot, not because I'm a socially awkward person who can't start a conversation, although I have learned I am bad at reading people.
I said I wasn't going to be up all night checking election results, but I remembered I had some purchases I had to download tonight or lose, because of "file sharing" protection and foolishly decided to clear out my email while they finished. Should have read a book.
But I'll take opportunity where I can get it. We've got a President who attacked a religious group as part of his campaign platform. It shouldn't be too hard to turn that from people(Muslims), to religion(Islam), to proselytizing religion (which includes Christianity). He's laid the grounds for getting religion out of the legislative process, for a truer separation of church and state, should we move carefully from this set precedent.
Since we do have a republican majority in the federal government, it should be easier to remove, or at least reign in the proselytizing leftist extremists in the public colleges and universities. And if we can steer public perception of religion to a more appropriate place we won't have to worry about proselytizing rightist extremists taking their places.
It's not ideal for me. I'd rather be talking less about religion than more, and I know those public institutes of higher learning are likely to lose funding while tuition continues to increase, but there are these and other opportunities all the same.

Buldogue's lawyerPierre Trudeau summed up canada's feelings on america way back in the day "Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt."
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Indirect: What? I... at what point was that any part of his campaign? At what point can you think it's a good idea to silence voices in universities and colleges? At what point do you think that's a thing that can happen uniformly across the country in any practical way? I mean seriously, "ending proselytizing voices" in college? The places where people are there to learn? And... how? Seriously, just how on a practical level?
Dude panders to the religious, but I don't think he actually gives a shit about that sort of thing. Now. Pence. Eeesh.

You guys are great. I'm sorry we live in these times, and that you live there.
I'd like to reassure you that if the unthinkable happened, then the quantity and quality of specialists, funds, and tools forthcoming from your friends overseas might surprise you.
Even if the provision of the same by foreign actors who stood to gain from the end of American democracy, or simply prolonging the situation, would not.
