Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also you know what else this means:
The GOP won't have to listen to their 2012 autopsy about being more inclusive. They can just now dropped all the bigoted dog whistles and be upfront about it. And the deplorables will eat that up.
Which means that the Democrats will have to move even further to the right.
Fuck this shit.
Hmm, so if Trump would actually go full evil dictatorial, he would probably also remove gun rights. I see .-.
Well anyway, I repeat what I noted for rural people before <_< It sounds awfully impolite to say it aloud, but you can't really blame them if they don't have education available. You kinda need education to have good media critcism ability and xenophobia is also a thing that happens due to lack of education since its about ignorance. If you are prone to believing what you are told on tv without questioning it, then you are going easily be influenced to become xenophobe...
I'm much more afraid of people who have good education available and are still bigots.

Apparently Trump's victory speech announced that he'll be The President of All Americans.
You know, I'd laugh, but this is exactly what our (Polish) current President said when he was elected too. There's a pattern.
Another parliamentarist whom I'm going to refer to as Cookies has claimed that Trump's victory is a victory over "political establishment, political corruption of elites and biased medias".
Biased medias. Right. The same medias that are responsible for his win in the first place.
Well, now that he won the election, where's this "Election is rigged" spiel?
A lot of people are ignorant yes but a very depressing amount understand what they're doing.
As a non-American citizen, I realize that the following questions may sound naive or even facetious, but I intend them as honest questions.
- Realistically, what would Trump have to do to be impeached?
- I read someone on another message board saying that Trump could potentially set America back 70 years. Is this a realistic statement, or is it just exaggeration?
Someone will have to inform Trump that he's not President yet. He's only President-Elect, and until he actually takes the inaugural oath, Obama is still in charge.
A lot can happen between now and then. Maybe Trump will have a heart attack from all the junk food he scarfs down...

This Space Intentionally Left Blank. We had something like that here in Argentina in the past. What is it with Authoritarian populists and claiming to be "president of all [x]"?
[[quoteblock]]Trump will appoint far-right judges. They will screw everything for decades.
You mean Alt-right, don't you?

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVIf the President-elect dies before being inaugurated, the Vice President-elect takes the job, which would be Pence. So, only a slight improvement.
The chances of Trump being impeached, let alone convicted, are astronomically low given that he's got a Republican House and Senate — unless some kind of miracle happens in the 2018 midterms, this is likely to persist for his entire first term.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's not THAT much of an exaggeration, as I understand it. Theoretically since Republicans are going to control every branch of government there is a LOT of harm that can be done to civil rights. Remember that Trump is riding on a wave of immense bigotry and resentment. The question is just how much, and for how long? The one thing I'd say is guaranteed to take a hit no matter what is LGBTQ+ rights, because of Pence's influence.
There will also very likely be an uptick of hate crimes and other more minor offenses since racists have essentially been emboldened by this move to say whatever, whenever. After all if it can get you elected, does it really matter using dogwhistles anymore?
As far as more extreme stuff like full dictator mode, concentration camps, media censorship, or even nuclear war etc I think it's possible but am not sure that things are going to go that far.

1) Impeachment is really, really rare. Thus, not likely.
2) Considering the Republicans have the House and the Senate AND Trump may be in charge of appointing a Supreme Court of three in the course of his term, there would be a significant setback to the attempts at social and political progress from Obama's two terms.

If the Democrats actually move to the right in response to this, they're going to fuck themselves over hard. Trump didn't win because he was rightwing, he won because he was anti-establishment and Clinton was extremely establishment.
You know, I went to bed assuming that Clinton was going to slam dunk this. There was never a point at which the internet wasn't trash talking virtually every aspect of Trump's campaign, and even former Sanders strongholds were rallying behind Clinton like it weren't no thing. Instead....
Everyone who defended the existence of the electoral college in this thread, you can go fuck yourselves to exactly the same degree as the voters just fucked this country.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Spooky Mask: That's another thing, it's Trump that has the "take your guns away from you" policy. Not Clinton
And let's face it, the 2nd Amendment only applied to white people anyway.
