The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I feel awful for different reasons than you guys though, I feel awful since this kinda confirms my bias about USA for me .-. Like I said, I have a looooooooot of pent up feelings about the country. I don't like having that much negative feelings about anything.

^Thing is though, I don't think you can really blame them though. I mean, this is going to be sound jerk-ish, and it probably is, but thats kinda what has always happened with populations who don't have good education available, their mediacriticism is low and xenophobia is high... I'm much more disturbed by people who had education available and are still bigots.

What is the popular vote count? I'm looking at Google's display and they have Clinton with 140,000 votes over Trump.

We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.

[up][up]And for once, I agree with you. No one really likes America the country right now, so much as America the idea, so if you're going to say something about America, now's the time.

In short, and as someone who grow up in rural America, fuck rural America.
On that issue, actually, I wouldn't worry about it. Because rural America has just fucked itself.

In the prescient words of Michael Moore in Trumpland (the latter part of which is an excessive paean to Clinton, imo):

MICHAEL MOORE: Donald Trump came to the Detroit Economic Club and stood there in front of the Ford Motor executives and said, "If you close these factories, as you’re planning to do in Detroit, and build them in Mexico, I’m going to put a 35 percent tariff on those cars when you send them back, and nobody is going to buy them." It was an amazing thing to see. No politician, Republican or Democrat, had ever said anything like that to these executives.

And it was music to the ears of people in Michigan and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—the Brexit states. If you live here in Ohio, you know what I’m talking about. Whether Trump means it or not is kind of irrelevant, because he’s saying the things to people who are hurting. And it’s why every beaten-down, nameless, forgotten working stiff who used to be part of what was called the middle class loves Trump. He is the human Molotov cocktail that they’ve been waiting for, the human hand grenade that they can legally throw into the system that stole their lives from them.

And on November 8th, Election Day, although they’ve lost their jobs, although they’ve been foreclosed on by the bank—next came the divorce, and now the wife and kids are gone, the car has been repoed, they haven’t had a real vacation in years, they’re stuck with the [bleep] Obamacare Bronze Plan, where you can’t even get a [bleep] Percocet—they’ve essentially lost everything they had—except one thing, the one thing that doesn’t cost them a cent and is guaranteed to them by the American Constitution: the right to vote. They might be penniless, they might be homeless, they might be [bleep] over and [bleep] up. It doesn’t matter, because it’s equalized on that day. A millionaire has the same number of votes as the person without a job: one. And there’s more of the former middle class than there are in the millionaire class.

So, on November 8th, the dispossessed will walk into the voting booth, be handed a ballot, close the curtain and take that lever, or felt pen or touchscreen, and put a big [bleep] X in the box by the name of the man who has threatened to upend and overturn the very system that has ruined their lives: Donald J. Trump. They see that the elites who ruined their lives hate Trump. Corporate America hates Trump. Wall Street hates Trump. The career politicians hate Trump. The media hates Trump—after they loved him and created him, and now hate him. Thank you, media. The enemy of my enemy is who I’m voting for on November 8th. Yes, on November 8th, you, Joe Blow, Steve Blow, Bob Blow, Billy Blow, Billy Bob Blow—all the Blows get to go and blow up the whole goddamn system, because it’s your right. Trump’s election is going to be the biggest "[bleep] you" ever recorded in human history.

And it will feel good—for a day, yeah, maybe a week, possibly a month. And then, like the Brits, who wanted to send a message, so they voted to leave Europe, only to find out that if you vote to leave Europe, you actually have to leave Europe. And now they regret it. All the Ohioans, Pennsylvanians, Michiganders and Wisconsinites of Middle England—right?—they all voted to leave, and now they regret it, and over 4 million of them have signed a petition to have a do-over. They want another election. It ain’t gonna happen, because you used the ballot as an anger management tool. And now you’re [bleep]. And the rest of Europe? The rest of Europe? They’re like, "Bye, Felicia."

So, when the rightfully angry people of Ohio and Michigan and Pennsylvania and Wisconsin find out after a few months in office that President Trump wasn’t going to do a damn thing for them, it will be too late to do anything about it. But I get it. You wanted to send a message. You had righteous anger and justifiable anger. Well, message sent. Good night, America. You’ve just elected the last president of the United States.

Ah, I see that this thread is going so fast that editing posts to comment on other posts just get buried fast ._. Well it is understandable since a lot of people are expressing their shock now.

@Physical Stamina: Believe me, I am. I find my country is really boring but I prefer it that way :'D I just hope we don't give up on welfare stuff and other stuff for good because of this economic situation... And I hope this won't affect us much, its bit scary with Russia being eastern neighbor since they have been more aggressive lately.

I see I didn't have any good news to wake up to. I'm not really disappointed or anything since I'd already accepted it.

In regards to what Trump will do, I see him being mostly a celebrity president with some small helpings of dictator. Maybe try to get at people who mock him too publicly and do some other nasty authoritative things, but mostly spend his time basking in the afterglow and doing as little work as possible.

This would effectively result in Pence doing a lot of work which is pretty terrible too.

I'm not sure about the internment camps or the mass deportations or even the nukes. I think minorities SHOULD be worried but Trump is the kind of guy who's more about talk than actually doing anything. That's one of the things giving me solace right now.

Either way I expect civil rights to take no progress and in fact take a lot of hits, and I don't know when you guys will recover from that. Probably the economy is going to go to shit as well if the paper Krieger linked to earlier is any indication and that's certain to have far-reaching global ramifications. Oh and there will probably be an uptick in hate crimes and microagressions as well, that's going to be terrible.

My own country was in a regressive and fascistic military dictatorship for like 2 decades. Take solace in the fact that even under an extreme scenario of government mandated censorship art can still make subtle digs and give you hope.

My final solace is that at least TVT is sane. We're not perfect but you guys are the real MVP's. We'll always have this place to give each other comfort over Trump's idiocy.

As someone from outside looking in, I believe in the ideal of America. I believe that all men are born equal, with the right to freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

This election's results seems set to kill that idea and replace it with a less palatable reality of America; America as a self-interested, selfish nation of flawed peoples, no different from China or Russia, with no moral substitute. It feels like the US has turned its back on the ideals that made it great, and no one is left to pick up the slack.

The popular vote is basically how the voting system works in the UK so in the UK, Clinton would have won. In the US, though, the assign the majority votes in certain districts, depending on population, as a count within that State for the Party and so on up the chain until you get the result that Clinton got more votes but Trump got them in the right places.

In other news, The BBC just did its round-up montage of election coverage, with "Best Day of My Life" playing over it.

Ya know, I've always found USA's "gun right for everyone so we can protect ourselves from oppression" thing absurd, but... Well, let's just say I really hope things won't come so bad that we actually see armed rebellion in practice, rebellions make things worse more often than not. I find it hard to believe that "resettlement camps" would actually become a thing, but if something like that actually happens, I can see things escalating...
