Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x5 Like I said, needlessly complicated. So why is everyone acting like Trump's already won?

Well, let's put it this way, there is a reason she has been in power that long. But we have an election year in 2017 and with the rise of the Af D and her possible not running for another term, I am really worried about the future. The only "good" thing about the Af D is that it is not THAT far right, but that is partly what makes it so dangerous...it looks more reasonable to the common voter than it deserves to be, considering what kind of politicians have decided to make the party their own.
Honestly, in a way it might be a good thing if Trump being in power leads to terrible consequences for the US soon, because that might deter the voters in other countries from believing in populist lies.

Actually, she rarely changes her position once she has made up her mind, but she has the tendency to wait a long time before she reveals her position - long enough to have studied the situation including the popular opinion.

That's the really sad part of all of this. I think most of us would just move to another country if we could, but either due to a lack of resources, personal obligations, or certain countries unwilling to take in immigrants, (like Canada,) it's just not feasible. And I wish it was.

Ooo! {Raises hand.} Me! Me!
Seriously though, I'm not happy about it, but I'm ready for it. All empires rise and fall. It only stands to reason that America's time in the sun was going to come to an end sooner or later. We're not going to go away completely, but I've got feeling that over the next 10-15 years, we're not going to be the same superpower or bright shining model of democracy either that we used to be either. And that makes me sad.

Alright, I think I got the hang of how the system works now. It's still weird though.
Still a great "screw depression" song even after seven years.Geez, the atmosphere in this topic is to toxic and panicy that I could probably express my wishes on America stopping being "most important country" in the world and overwritting other cultures with theirs without anybody being bothered
I have a lot of pent up feelings about America I avoid expressing since I want to try being polite. Not all rational feelings though, China and Russia are also bad, but I'm offended by USA claiming to be "good guy. USA has never been "shining beacon of freedom and democracy" from what I've seen in history books.
Anyway, yeah, in all seriousness my depression causes me to feel apathetic about actual chance of world ending, but I also have hard time believing it would happen. I mean, sometimes in my darker moments I feel like USA has been this bad for years already, so I just find it hard to see things actually being worse, its just more apparent to everyone now what America is like. And surely in Internet age in western country, someone would try to do something if Trump started doing blatantly evil shit? Well I hope so at least.

I mean, I don't mind that. Let someone else becomes the world's biggest superpower so they can splooge their culture everywhere and it becomes okay to make fun of them because they have the most power. I just hate that this is how it had to happen, one, and two, that we're gonna be an even bigger laughingstock than we already are.
i'm tired, my friendAlso, just curious, heard some people claiming here that Trump used to be liberal .-. Is this actually real quote by him or made up?
I mean, if that is a real quote, whether he changed his stance or not, how the heck repuglican voters vote for this guy if he has quotes calling them idiots?

Guys, I'm in the military.
I'm essentially working for Trump.
And since the economy is pretty much gonna go tits up in a few years, I'm basically forced to work for him.
Sorry, but whatever sympathy I had for rural America is now completely gone.
They voted for a conman because they were afraid of nutcases that live across an entire goddamn ocean. Despite it being much more likely that a fellow citizen will kill you.
They voted for a conman because they were tired of political correctness, ie. "basic human fucking decency." Oh but don't dare "tell it like it is" about them because they would throw a bitch fit
They voted for a conman because they were tired of the blacks and the browns taking entitlements and that they themselves only deserve them. Ignoring the fact that they also get said entitlements and Trump's party is pretty much gonna cut them to hell.
They voted for a conman because they hated government tyranny. While said conman is pretty much going to allow the cops, armed forces of the tyrannical government they hate, to do what they please.
In short, and as someone who grew up in rural America, fuck rural America.
