Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

- Israel's PM says he can "work" with Trump
- Theresa May says that the Special Relationship is a thing
- Angela Merkel says that she will work with Trump provided he not be homophobic, xenophobic, misogynist, racist, etc, etc.
May and Merkel are friends of HRC, and obviously wanted it to be an all-girl show.
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!I think people here are exaggerating, somewhat.
Trump will be, at worst, a transatlantic Berlusconi. Yes, the economy will likely take a hit, he'll try to (successfully or unsuccessfully) limit the autonomy of some of the executive branches, you'll probably see quite a few scandals regarding lewd conduct and corruption, immigration conditions will tighten and relations with certain nations will be put on ice for a while.
Democracy won't be abolished, death camps for minorities won't be set up, Trump won't keep sex slaves in the dungeons of the White House and there won't be a nuclear holocaust. Hell, I doubt we'll witness anything more than Libya-style interventions.
America is too big to fall. Even Dubya and his gang of neocons couldn't run it to the ground.
It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.![]()

Aye. Trump & the GOP can do a lot of damage with the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court, but a lot of the worst predictions need the civil service and the military to be on board with them.

Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodI'm going to take a couple sick days and spend some time with my family - hopefully, that will help.
I pray that things won't be as bad as we fear, but that's really all I can do right now.
Anyway, I can't bring myself to watch all of the Daily Show's coverage just yet. Still, I think we could all use a bit of comedy, so here it is - your Moment of Zen
.
So anything on the Executive is basically going to be Corrupt Toupee x Corrupt Governor's set up. I half get the impression Pence is going to be shoved into a closet while the real Mafiaso shit between Christie and Trump goes on.

Jeez, how long has it been since I last crawled out of my hovel in We Are All Pokemon Trainers? Anyway...
TBH, if Clinton really did beat Trump in the popular vote, that's just another sign, alongside the Bush v Gore fiasco, of how screwed-up the American election system really is. Here in Britain, we're lucky enough to have something based purely on the popular vote, meaning the people are genuinely represented unless flagrant gerrymandering takes place. Meanwhile, Clarste's comment about big cities is indicative of how out of balance the electoral college system is. Not to mention how ridiculous it is that you have no coalition failsafe when an election turns out this close; we may have bitched and moaned about our own Cameron/Clegg coalition and its inability to get shit done, but it was universally acknowledged to be better than the alternative of a candidate who wasn't popular enough to deserve it getting the lion's share.
As for Trump's presidency... meh. Much as I may vehemently hate his supporters, my initial reaction to the guy himself claiming victory was less rage or fear and more this
. He may talk big, but I get the distinct impression he's too incompetent to put his plans into motion with any sort of efficiency, especially when even a majority Republican congress is going to be fighting him tooth and nail throughout. And even then, 90% of his worst ideas would violate the constitution anyway, including stuff like the wall and mass ethnic deportation
. So yeah, be bitter, maybe keep a lookout for armed militia types, but don't get too paranoid.
Well, here's to you, American Democracy *raises can of Java Monster*. You had a good run, but you pretty much set yourself up to fail the second you decided that stupid, uneducated, racist fuckwads deserve the same vote as everyone else.
Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.I hope to God some of you guys are right.
But if we start seeing "temporary relocation sites" (because we can't keep letting those animals pollute our communities, take our jobs, rape our women, and shoot our children) and "humane facilities" for processing 11 million people (before we shove them south of the border where they belong)...
I'll admit, I'm torn between taking advantage of my education and my class and getting the fuck out of this country the second I can. And staying.
I'm called to, and call others to recognize, the stories of people like Ralph Lazo,
a Mexican/Irish American who volunteered to go to a Japanese American internment camp during World War 2.

The US election system looks needlessly complicated to me. But from what I've heard, I guess it's more or less over now?
Still a great "screw depression" song even after seven years.Oh, Merkel's speech was pretty good...she basically said that as long as Trump keeps following the democratic principles, there is nothing to worry about...and then hinted that if he starts to dismantle them, all bets are off. But she has a lot of experience with Meglomaniacs, after all she has dealt with them for years.
@Corvidae — not even close. They haven't finished counting the votes yet, so they've got to do that. The votes are officially confirmed later this month, and in December the Electoral College (given votes from the votes in this election) will vote for President.
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!![]()
Again, in all likelihood, while a Trump Presidency wouldn't be a good thing, it probably won't be a catastrophe either. My best guess that is that while there might be some regressive laws and whatnot passed, for the most part, there isn't anything that's going to be really game-changing. It's not preferable, but it will most likely be something we can put up with.

As much as I'd like to GTFO to, well, anywhere where some semblance of sanity and decency still remain, doing that would leave my parents and sister to figure out how they're going to take care of things without me to come running at the drop of a hat - something that I've been tempted by more than once, to be sure, but still not an option, especially if it means having to deal with "normal" people.
So, ultimately, I'll most likely just do what I've always done: head down, get through the day, and try to resist the urge to swerve out of the way if I'm about to be run over by some idiot (haven't succeeded yet, but maybe I will some day).

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

I'd worry, were I you. Cheney wasn't a great Really-the-President lurking behind Bush. Ask yourself who will really be behind Trump if he goes full-on Robert Baratheon (with a 6th of the integrity and about a 64th the generosity). <_<
