Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Quick question; for those of you who are old enough to remember the experience (I'm actually not, but disregarding that), was there a similar reaction to when Bush won back in 2000? I have a feeling that Trump will just be the next Bush, personality notwithstanding (say what you want about Bush, but he at least seemed like a nice guy to have a drink with. I wouldn't feel comfortable having a drink with Trump. :V)
Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!Silver lining - for me: apparetnly, Trump might screw with Los Angeles' candidacy for the 2024 Olympics, which means more chances to have them in Paris. I really feel like the misery of millions of American people is a small price to pay to get to enjoy Olympics on your own soil.

Trump could go one of two ways, he's either gonna be President Sociopath or President Celebrity.
In the first case it's full on nightmare mode, Clinton gets jailed, Obama has his secret service detail cut and ends up murdered, journalists are rounded up, the women who accused Trump of sexual assault are locked up, NATO collapses, mass deportations and camps, Trump's family getting appointed to the Supreme Court, the full shitshow.
In the second case we're basically looking at President Pence for the next while, Trump does nothing but flit around, it's be GWB but with less kindness and even less appeared of being in charge. It's the Republican agenda down the line, tax breaks for the rich, no actual mass deportations or support for the poor, Obamacare gone, a possible war with Iran, LGBT rights rolled back across the board and both Gay Marrige and Roe VS Wade hanging by a thread.
In either situations there's the ego factor, Trump could easily end up sexually assaulting someone as they tour the White House, while war due to ego is unlikely in the second case even then we can expect many cancled diplomatic visits due to bruised egos, state dinners will either be on message good nights or shitshows as Trump goes off on a racist tangent in front of a foreign guest.
Anyone wanna place bets on which we are going to get?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWhen Bush won the first time there was a lot of eye-rolling going on. The world wasn't exactly pleased, but while Bush was an idiot, he was an idiot who had at least some competent guidance. When he got a second term the issue was more the question if the election was rigged or not (I still think that it should have been repeated in a number of states).
But no, the reaction wasn't anything like the current one...it was more "Oh god, we have to deal with this idiot for the next year, the Americans will never learn, will the?" and not "Oh god, how will we survive this idiot for the next years, what have the stupid Americans done??????"
I just hope that Merkel will run for another term, because if she doesn't, there is no way to predict who we will have to deal with instead...plus, she is fluent in Russian and less likely to make a hasty move in international politics. She was also pretty good in side-stepping Bush. Like her or not, we need some stability in the EU, and she is one of the most respected politicians out there.
America is gonna have to suffer the consequences, and have it be a wake up call for all younger voters that didn't try and stop trump.

Not surprising. A relatively huge fraction of the population lives in large cities, which both lean liberal and are intentionally underrepresented by the Electoral College. Any even remotely close election should end up like that.
So, assuming she did win the popular vote, how would that and the fact that a lot of Republicans despise Trump affect proceedings at all?
If Trump's presidency ultimately amounts to just standard Republican stuff, I could accept that. It's not good, but at least we'd know what to expect. Better the devil you know, and all.

Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!Maybe I'm just optimistic, but realistically I don't see Trump going full dictator (although he could). The Celebrity president is better, technically, but the ultra-conservative agendas of people like Mike Pence don't exactly fill me with confidence. That's really what I'm worried about happening.

Another song for the day instead of The End of the World as We Know It:
Also, for people thinking about leaving the US, Argentina seems to be trying this sanity thing that's becoming so rare in the world nowadays (though we do have a few problems), we have a good amount of English as a second language speakers with decent level, and compared to the US the cost of living is rather low. Just bring many dollars and try to either cozy-up with a politician or begin a start up when you arrive. If you come to the province of Entre Ríos, I'll invite you to drink some mate
with me.
