Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm just gonna pop in and leave this here.
I hope these remain true throughout the next for yers.
Errrr, question.
I was translating the responce on our social media by request for some Amercians, and there is this presistant thing on there that "The Clinton campaign should have brought up that trumps wife is an illegal immigrant"
Is.... is that true? Or is it just something that a lot of people have in there heads back home?
The whole Trumps wife being an illegal immigrant thing, I am not asking for an opinion on mudslinging.
@nerv-mesiter Many of us might be over-exaggerating but it's no exaggeration to say that tonight has actually been a horrible day for America.
We voted in an unstable guy who likes to brag about sexual assault and someone who likes to electrocute gay kids into being straight.

Imca: For a period of time, yes, it was true as she was working without a visa for a period of time.
I recall Kurt Eichenwald doing some digging and confirming it, but either my college internet has packed it in or Twitter's servers are.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotI don't judge by skin color. I judge by content of character. His character is not good. Speaking as a black gay man myself, we need to stop judging people by their label. That is a big reason why Trump had support. that and poor people who were left behind. Only the GOP made a token efforts to help them. Democrats never made a effort. Yes I know that GOP efforts worked but they tried. I can talk in PM if you want to.
I'm going to bed. Thanks for experiencing this shitshow with me.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.I have a running joke that the US is actually just an elaborate reality show for the rest of the world. I suppose Trump is some sort of meta-commentary on that.
Seriously, though, he must be the least qualified and least honest major political candidate in the history of the Western hemisphere. In a reality show or soap opera he'd be panned by critics as an unrealistic caricature.
Now he'll be among the worst world leaders alive, a bit above Mugabe and Kim but below Berlusconi.

You see, for the last year I've been thinking about a few things, all related over the progress humanity as a whole made and how it wouldn't have setbacks, how the fragile democracy could be, how reason wouldn't always prevail against sensationalism, how facts won't always beat emotions and how even with all the progress in social, racial and gender equality the reactionary groups would fight against it and win some battles.
I guess 2016 was the year it happened.
In other news, it seems there are protests in Oakland over the results.
Also Putin gives his congrats to Trump. The Baltics are fucked.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIf Trump had won the presidency, but the GOP lost either house of Congress, this wouldn't be as big of a problem, but what we have is essentially the worst case scenario - two of three branches of government controlled by one party and poised to do the same to the third branch, meaning that for the next two years (next chance at Congressional elections for the entire House and 1/3 of the Senate) or four years (next presidential election), the Republican Party holds pretty much all federal governmental power, with the ONLY check still intact being the fillibuster. EDIT: That, and the difficulty of justifying overturning SCOTUS precedent.
