Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, I was waiting until the news sites reached some kind of definitive consensus, but apparently that's not happening tonight, so good night. Hopefully I can still squeeze in enough sleep.
never mind then

There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty. Many criticisms of the Democrats and Clinton have been vindicated, I think. Pounding on the Russia stuff was a particularly dumb tactic.
Republicans controlling two branches of the government is incredibly concerning, particularly worried about LGBT friends in the US.
Not to mention the emboldening of the far-right worldwide.
Shit sucks.
Something light-hearted, I hope:

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!And it's official, I need to get out of here before we get pre-emptively nuked. Not necessarily out of the Free American Empire, mind, just somewhere a little further from a major counterforce target like Stratcom and Offut AFB. Okay, so not actually, because I'm still hopeful enough to think that nobody's going to actually start a nuclear war before we can vote out this fascist orangutan.
@R. Bluefish: I can't say for sure, but I have a suspicion that what they felt was similar. 'But the Social Democrats suck just as bad' 'He'll never actually do [insert insane thing he said he'd do, and then DID do], so it was fine to vote for him', and so on.

Now is the time to find strength in our ideals and each other. Let these coming years show the world that even in our darkest times, even in our lowest, there is still good in this country. May our country's spirit persevere, may our democracy persevere, even as evil seeks to snuff it out. We must keep hope alive. We must keep freedom alive. Keep the fire burning my friends. It has been and will continue to be an honor.
Do not concede Hilary. FIGHT HIM!

Stand Fast, Stand Strong, Stand Together

There is a question about if the Senate Republicans will act to kill the filibuster for all decisions a.k.a. the nuclear option. That secures them the supreme court (Their number 1 goal) and anything else they want to achieve.
On the other hand, they need the filibuster in place to give them a firewall against Trump. If everything in the senate can be decided by a majority vote, then Republicans can pass anything. Meaning they will be to blame for any delays - and since Trump has shown no sign of supporting the GOP he will use the bully pulpit of the White House and Fox News to force Congress to toe the line. Giving the Democrats the opportunity to be the obstructionists for a change gives Congress some power over Trump. So it will be interesting to see how that one goes.
Most likely - nuclear option only enforced for supreme court appointments. All other policies can be filibustered.
