Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Will those younger generations get a wake up call or will they withdraw further?
Continue writing our story of peace. In the midst of everything, I almost forgot about this. From 538:
Again I'm seeing a lot of my friends musing that if the Democrats want to win in the future they need to find a way to tap the traditionally Republican demographics, and part of this involves having to suck it up and change the tone of their rhetoric to avoid othering the "straight white cis male" demographic because it promotes division, and instead find a way to redirect their xenophobia in a more constructive way, quoting LBJ:
Sure it's understandable to think, "these people have crossed the Moral Event Horizon with their views so I don't want such people supporting me", but as this election showed they wield incredible voting power and they're not exactly going away, even as the evangelicals fade out of relevance. So it's dangerous to dismiss them as not worth their while. If we can get them on board and drag them away from the GOP somehow, hopefully their children will grow up in a more tolerant environment.
The problem is how to do this without resorting to the same xenophobic populism of the GOP. It might take some dishonesty on the Democrats' part.

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!

A couple years back, I was being pressured to find a job in the States instead of staying in my overseas job.
In retrospect, staying overseas was a good call.

Of course the older generation were the ones most responsible for voting in Trump. Couldn't resist getting in one last dig at us young whippersnappers.
