Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

from 538 There’s been an ongoing debate about the sources of Trump support, and it will only heat up after tonight’s stunning result. But I wanted to offer a few quick preliminary thoughts. First, it’s critical to differentiate why candidates win primaries and why they win general elections. And second, in re-reading explanations from Trump’s primary supporters about why they backed him, one thing that stands out to me is their anger at the political system, a point Lynn Vavreck made as well. Any politician who wins a primary is going to gain support for lots of reasons. But as we are figuring out the reasons for Trump’s unexpected success, don’t discount the number of Republicans who saw politics as deeply broken — and saw a businessman and outsider as an answer.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Tomorrow is not going to be a good day to work with fire and knives. -,-
But the world turns on, people gotta have lunch, and I'm the only cook on staff.
Good night, and good luck, everyone. This is not the end. Stay safe out there, especially our friends of color in red territory. Our thoughts are with each and every one of you.
That's a very good point for all of the states that went Trump.
If you had a system that went with the popular vote you'd probably have a President Clinton very soon.
I heard on the BBC just now that even NY Times has Pennsylvania red. That's a very reliable source, and I'd say this is it now.
I'll probably try to stay up until I hear Clinton's speech, and maybe Trump's; but I'm not sure, it'll depend on how much longer it takes.

Continue writing our story of peace. As someone pointed out - if and when there really is a mass exodus of decent people from the States, most likely fleeing to Canada, it'll only make things that much more impossible for those remain behind. Whether they remain behind by choice or not.
I am so, so tempted to just run. But we can't just give up on the people who are still going to be trapped here with Trump.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."A shock for the time being, I guess. And then we shall see what the GOP's economic policies are actually good for.
Midterms: Ain't gonna happen. Asides from gerrmandering, the same demographics in play today aren't going to change that drastically in 2 years. And this is before the post-fact rationalization that's already run rampant.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Can you please not treat a very large and diverse state as a fucking monolith, thank you very much. According to Google there's 3,737,320 of us in Texas who voted for Clinton.
