Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

All I've gotta say guys, is that just because Trump wins, doesn't mean you can give up on political participation or write off the government as hopelessly lost. If anything, you might need to become politically active more than ever to offset the potentially horrible damage on the horizon.
Just don't give up.

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!That's the reality I've been confronted with. I think I've been silent for way too long, out of cowardice, but if this is the alternative I don't think I'm afraid of speaking up anymore.
Incidentally, if Trump does win - you have my sympathies. The world in general will suffer greatly, but of course the most direct, and most severe, effects will be felt in the US.
It will be even harder than it has been for LGBT people, religious minorities (and the nonreligious), and basically all minorities.
You will have legislation designed to hinder democracy and journalism. You'll have huge economic disasters and wildly misappropriated spending, with no recuperative effect on any area or group except for the top 1%. He will ruin the Supreme Court for a long time to come.
I know that only a bit over 50% of American voters will have turned up, and of those a bit under 50% will have voted for him. I won't judge the entire country based on that. I know that most of you are better than that, and better than him.
I feel deeply sorry for you.
THAT SAID, that only applies if he does win. It's not over yet.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
Reading tropes such as You Know What You Did
Would this be in bad taste?

Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursYeah, Trump wins because of voter's apathy. Withdrawing from politics is making the same mistakes again.
Continue writing our story of peace.Best Of, do you honestly think Clinton has a prayer?
Evil won tonight. I'm trying to go to sleep and not hate America.
Its hard.

Allow me to quote a little Jin Kisaragi:
"Give up? You have got to be joking. I've already given up on life... on the world. But I've decided to cast aside apathy and fight... not only against this so-called 'order,' but against the world!
Let that be our motto today.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Basically my feelings 100%.
These events have just made me more committed to standing up for injustice to the extent I can and trying to create a future with less of Trump in it.
So you were thinking of that too, were you?
Our one consolation is that Trump doesn't have evil magic powers. He only has nukes instead ;_;

Which is what makes me feel better about not really wanting to give up my job and emigrate. Stay and try to fix things from the inside.
I mean, I have sometimes thought over the last few years, sure, let the GOP take over, and let them be the ones getting criticized for every breath they take. I just didn't expect it to happen like this.
There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.Yes, I did. Even though it almost made me physically ill to do so. She is so deeply and utterly corrupt that it would never even occur to her that she should be any different, even after tonight. She would have been a terrible president. But that's nothing compared to what's coming. Let's see, right off the top of my head.
Hate groups will be emboldened by Trump's victory. Quite a few people will die.
Not only will Scalia be replaced with someone just like him, but RBG likely will too.
The Baltic states are likely to be swallowed whole by Russia, unopposed.
Environmental regulations will cease to exist. The Paris Accord will fall apart without the US. Worst case, any chance of curtailing climate change will evaporate into thin air.
And let's not forget, Trump once said he wants to declare bankruptcy so he can renegotiate the nation's debt. Which if he even suggests doing again while in office will obliterate the world economy.
e: Oh yeah, almost forgot. The Affordable Care Act is dead on day one. Millions can say good bye to their health insurance subsidies.
Does that about cover the big ticket items?

With trump pulling away in penn this is all but done folks. If any yank can afford to go halfsies on 700 living costs I will seriously consider marrying you. Canada just elected a feminist liberal who's moving towards national pot legislation.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?
