The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's apparently never too late to go back to 1876.

I can't believe it. Those silent Trump voters and very possibly third party voters made enough of a difference that Trump won.

I'm trawling for more official "people in line" sources. So far only finding west coast ones and lots of anecdotes in PA.

There is a minor silver lining if Trump does win. He has up to 75 lawsuits waiting for him, a majority of which do not have Presidential immunity. Some could be delayed, but the ones that have a time limit can't be. And, of course, Trump University. There is nothing he can do to delay or cancel that trial.

The people in the BBC studio are talking about how, if Trump wins, this will really be the weirdest win ever in politics, at least in living memory. No experience, no previous political offices held, all those scandals that would have disqualified anyone that was taken seriously - and he looks like he's probably won.

THAT SAID, it's not over yet. Let's have the vote counts from the Mideast and Pennsylvania before we give up. (Also, there might be need for a recount or two.)

Would a revival of the Black Panther movement now be plausible?

Where is Fighteer in all this anyways?

I suppose it's a sign of what a privileged upbringing I've had that this is a new feeling for me.

...Real talk: everybody, this is Drumpf we're talking about here. Do you really think he has impulse control at this point?

Okay, if we want to change things. From now on...lets volunteer for poor people and homeless people. Stand up for or Muslim, Latino and LGBTQ friends. Just do everything, and vote in the midterm elections.

We've become brothers and sisters in despair.
Quote of the night, I think.

I keep thinking back to this commencement speech Neil Gaiman gave once; "And when things get tough, this is what you should do. Make good art." I'm going to keep drawing, and writing, and learning, and researching, and I'm going to do my best to be there for people and try to set an example through my actions. The next few years (and longer)... they're going to be rough. I have no illusions about that. But the way I see it, giving up is not an option.

I'm probably not going to be here for awhile. There's a lot I have to work through after tonight. But I'm rooting for you folks. Best of luck.

@Wildcard: I think you're right. Anyone who knows me knows I care about social issues, but I've never had enough influence or activity to count myself as an actual activist.

I think that needs to change. All of us need to get out there.

I don't think I'll ever have to worry about that where I live since I'm pretty white-passing, but I'm sure I'd be scared in much the same way you are if I lived in the US.
