The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'd be worried about South Korea if Trump follows up on comments about withdrawing our forces from there. Given the current turmoil I'd wonder if Lil' Kim wouldn't try to take advantage of the ensuing chaos.

Trump starting nuclear war: Given that people have been sacked for asking whether the two man rule can guarantee that the President is sane while providing the order, yeah, there's nothing stopping him.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Pennsylvania Trump lead 0.4%, 96%

New Hampshire Trump lead 0.1%, 82%

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

Stolen (terrible) joke but here it is:

  • 2015: Trump running? It is just a joke and protest candidate.
  • 2016: What do you mean he is winning?
  • 2017: He can't do that, can he?
  • 2018: I hope my district wins the next Hunger Games.

I think the general air of anti-intellectualism that the post-Reagan GOP has cultivated has a lot to do with it. Notice how wide of a gap there even among white males, between the educated and uneducated groups.

If there is a draw - which seems fantastically unlikely at this point - what happens then?

Congress decides it and appoints Trump anyway because it's Republican dominated, unless a number of the more sane Republicans decide "This is a very bad idea" and stand with the Democrats.

If significant evidence emerges that there really was widespread voter suppression, would it still be too late to change anything?

The sickest twist of this night to me.

Eight years ago tonight, I was sitting in the living room of my childhood home with my father, watching election coverage. When Obama gave his acceptance speech, my father cried, because he was so proud of our country.

Tonight, I'm grateful that my father died in July so that he didn't have to see this.

God, I wish I drank.

Considering Cruz and Mccain continuing to support Trump after the Billy Bush video leaked I don't think the "moderate" Republicans have courage in significant enough numbers to vote against him.

Man, the polls were so incredibly wrong.

Except for the polls on marijuana legalization, which were just about spot on. Go figure.
