Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!Maybe, if the US didn't have nuclear weapons, the rest of the developed world could put it down if it went mad. But they, Trump, have the nuclear triad. There is no stopping the Free American Empire.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Eh, problem is, eventually The Good King dies and eventually you get The Caligula with no checks or Henry VI or some other buffoon who couldn't rule his way out of a soggy paper bag.
Probably going to join the upside-down flag squad if Mango Mussolini gets 270 and I have to write "Free American Empire" over "United States of America" on all my maps.

If you have someone who's not an idiot and actually a competent governor it's not so bad. But you don't really want absolute power given to anybody because it is extremely horrible in the wrong hands.
And honestly there have been so many terrible monarchs I would never chance it again.

re: people calling for monarchies
Please, the world has already seen what a mass fascination with "strong leaders" across the globe can do.
Someone in the Russia thread actually made a good point about how this election has potentially done much to discredit the appeal of democratic reforms in the eyes of other peoples in the world. The Russian and Chinese governments especially have incentive to "discover" and present reasons of why the Status Quo Is God to their citizens.

Nukes require a lot of sign-off on a long chain and if he tried to launch an unprovoked attack we're looking at a general's coup.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

I guess there's always Elizabeth Warren to try to pull an Obama but she probably lacks appeal to moderates.
