The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If this goes down to 270/268 the faithless could move things but then there would be grounds for a legit civil war.

We could start a state swap program. We'll trade you alberta and sask for cali, deal?

White identity politics seems to have won. All that can truly be said, and also that minorities didn't side with clinton enough.

There is not a legal way to stop the transfer of power to a newly elected President. The legislature could attempt impeachment but it has to be provable that they did something worth impeaching and doing so without a majority backing you is highly unlikely.

Humorous thought: Even if Hillary does turn this around, that jackass in Washington might still turn faithless and throw the election.

BUT Clinton could still win; she needs the States she's leading in at the moment plus Michigan plus Pennsylvania and then one of the other three (NH/Arizona/Wisconsin).

Like I said, if I meet anyone new from now on, there's going to be a lingering suspicion of where their political loyalties really lie. What this election proved was that there is a Black Shirt on every street corner. They're in our schools, our workplaces, and our social circles, and they hate people of color like me, even when they say they don't. This country is going to be subjected to a great white terror, when the uneducated barbarians that put Trump in the oval office will have full license to brutalize any minority they want.

Be positive!

With Trump's history of pathologically lying... maybe he'll be the best president ever. By doing nothing he promised to do and then doing the exact opposite!

And again I remind you that both parts of Congress will go Republican and the missing seat on the SC will be filled with a conservative. Given that Trump in this case would have won the anti-Trumpers will crumble as an opposition.

Clinton trails Trump by only about 2,000 votes in PA. Granted, 95% of the votes have already been counted, but...

I wonder how much of the Hillary mudslinging from the primaries has to do with the current state of things. Bona fide leftists were saying some vicious things about her then.

If Trump wins there will be a Republican majority in Congress and he will have control over the Supreme Court.

There will be no checks and balances at that point. Literally no law or right is safe.

Oh really when?

Dow is down 800 and the Nikkei is down 5.3%.

In a choice between a reality TV show Star and a woman who has been trying to become president since her husband left the White House, America essentially voted against Hillary not caring who was on the other side.

2000 isn't a lot.

To be honest, if Pennsylvania does go red it will be the biggest surprise of all the states in this election for me.

There's still hope that Pennsylvania will get the results from some urban place and go back to Clinton, and then we'll need something similar in the two Midwest states currently leaning Trump.

It's possible.

I'm also still wondering about those reports that people are still queuing. If it's true and they're in big polling places it's not over yet.
