The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

When Trump wins, is there any situation under which he is blocked from becoming President?

He's got 75 lawsuits coming due, does that count?

Reality and delusions usually end up with Reality winning

You know what, you're right.

I deluded myself into thinking that things like honesty and integrity mean a goddamned thing.

I deluded myself into thinking that there was no way people would vote for a xenophobic, fascistic, egotistical rapist with absolutely no fucking idea how to run anything.

I deluded myself into thinking that people are good, and decent, and tolerant of others, even in spite of all their flaws.

And probably the biggest and most damning delusion of all, I thought that there might actually be hope for the future.

HELLO REALITY, NICE TO MEET YOU.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

@RBluefish: About the only scenario would be some kind of medical condition found or arising that basically cripples his ability to be President.

So, best case scenario, we get four years of Trump.

Worst case scenario, we get Pence.

@Madskillz: AGAIN, if he couldn't win the primaries, then Bernie could not have won the general. An anti-establishment persona didn't help him all that much.

Except Hillary's strengths were based on her strength in southern states that would never vote go for her in the GE.

Bernie would've taken Wisconsin and Michigan which are heavy-white states and those seem like they're going to do her in.

[up]x9 If it's any consolation, Pence will probably be doing the actual governing. Though I'm not sure if that's any real consolation at all.

@R Bluefish Yes: I can try and track down a source but some folks in the military said what Trump wants to do would constitute a war crime and by rights they cannot follow such an order. Were that to happen he's gone.

I remember my friends saying earlier this afternoon that the various polls taken from before the election might've been so slanted towards Hillary because a lot of prospective voters know how hated Trump is and were pretending that they were gonna vote Hillary, but really wanted Trump to win in the end.

A President can be removed by a vote of no confidence. This requires a signed document from the VP and 50%+1 of the Cabinet stating their belief that, should the President remain in office, the country will become unconstitutional. The VP steps up, Pres. never allowed to stand for any political office again.

Something would have to happen between now and Jan 3 to render Trump unelectable, but given all that's happened already I have no idea what it would take. And that would just mean advancing Mike Pence.

....at...at least he probably won't get to put any of his policies in order. Right? Right?

Senate will also be majority Republican, so he won't have any of Obama's obstacles. He'll nominate the most conservative Supreme Court Justice he can find, and they'll suddenly decide it's worth voting on. And these people have no principles, just pure, black-hearted partisanship. There's nothing left to stop him from running the country straight into the ground, like all his business ventures.
