The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If you feed them, they'll never leave. This is what comes of mainstream Republicans cultivating this demographic for decades, and the media throwing gas on the fire of every controversy that comes along in service of ratings and clicks.

It's still not over, we're waiting on the end of Wisconsin and Michigan. Plus we have unconfirmed reports of big uncounted votes in North Carolina and people still waiting to vote in other states.

@Madskillz: AGAIN, if he couldn't win the primaries, then Bernie could not have won the general. An anti-establishment persona didn't help him all that much.

The Immigration Canada website just crashed. I thought you guys moving here was a figure of speech?

The US has crossed the Moral Event Horizon.

Don't wanna sound Anti-American (I love you guys) but I can think of way worse the USA did in its history.

I mean, you re-elected the guy who got you into a war under false pretense a mere 12 years ago... so I mean, there's a history of bad choices there.

Our first mistake was not voting Bernie in over Hillary and his anti-establishment image was the only way to counter Trump's.

Let's say for a second that Sanders one the Primaries and actually defeated Trump. He'd still have to contend with a both a Senate and a House that are predominantly GOP. As feel good as his ambitions were, he would not be able to get anything done in those circumstances.

I actually wonder if an actual Trump presidency would operate in some vein of the Kennedy administration, what with an extremely public and attention stealing president who leaves much of the actual policy making to his advisers.

Well shit, as a Puerto Rican/Ecuadorian I can't help but be worried. Worried for my personal safety because someone is going to confuse me with a Mexican.

And in a weird way, I get it.

People felt like the 1% had been screwing them over for years now economically, corruption had become a daily news item politically, and seeming pillars of society have been torn down socially in favor of political correctness. This terrifies people and they were desperate to reverse the trend.

Now I don't think Trump is the person you want doing that...at all...but it makes sense from that perspective.

The core of it is manufacturing and retail jobs. To these people, you cannot have a functioning economy without a sufficient number of them, with those jobs available to the middle class. The racism comes in when you realize the middle class is currently majority white, so it becomes about making sure people who are not part of the American middle class will not "steal" those job openings.

While there are also more fringe positions like evangelism, that's the nasty root of the voter base that has basically elected Trump at this point.
