Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I wanted to believe he couldn't win but complacency is often just as bad if not worse than outright malice.
It bears repeating: remember that we have each other. Be there for your friends, your family, etc especially if they're the ones who are going to be the most hurt by this. They need you right now.
@Pseudo Partition Not to kick you while you're down, but the constant naysaying from all corners probably gave Trump a boost. That contrarian streak is alive and well. The press made him into an underdog, and gave him all the attention he could have wanted to focus his charisma on an audience.

@zero: I'm sorry about your home situation and I'm sorry this election is so close but don't lose hope. WW 1, WW 2, the cold war, 9/11. We've weathered many storms. Humanity's best quality is that no matter the horror, no matter the odds we overcome. There are 200 other nations out there and a lot of the big ones are moving in the right direction. China and India know they can't govern ash so they're working hard to build a more sustainable future.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I'm thinking of a trip to Antarctica.
Best-case scenario: I find Captain America frozen in the ice.
Average-case scenario: I get lost for four years and I don't have to deal directly with Trump. I would still have a SHITTON of mistrust towards older white people, but I'd take what I can get.
Worst-case scenario: I freeze to death. At least I don't have to deal directly with Trump.

In some way that is even worse than being hurt by Trump.

Continue writing our story of peace. So we are pretty much having Dr. Weil as the next president of the US. God help us.
I am seriously considering moving from Florida though. They've gone completely red all across the board and I don't think I can live here and start a family long term.
Reading tropes such as You Know What You Did
This seems appropriate.

Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursThere. I found the solution. Voter suppression. That's literally the only explanation that makes sense.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.I really really do not see us weathering this one, he will have complete control over the government and nothing can stop the policies he plans to enact. Especially the Supreme Court judges will doom women's rights for decades, gay rights as well. As well as the economic policies that will devastate the US economy and the rest of the world's.
That's not even getting into Foreign Policy...
and it looks like white women without college degrees went for trump. Partisanship is a helluva drug.

"Move to Canada" is just a thing people say when they're mad things aren't going their way in this country. They may mean it at the moment but very few actually follow through on it because it means spending a whole lot of money to move to a place where you probably don't have much in the way of friends or family.
