The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Move to Canada" is just a thing people say when they're mad things aren't going their way in this country. They may mean it at the moment but very few actually follow through on it because it means spending a whole lot of money to move to a place where you probably don't have much in the way of friends or family.

I wanted to believe he couldn't win but complacency is often just as bad if not worse than outright malice.

It bears repeating: remember that we have each other. Be there for your friends, your family, etc especially if they're the ones who are going to be the most hurt by this. They need you right now.

@Pseudo Partition Not to kick you while you're down, but the constant naysaying from all corners probably gave Trump a boost. That contrarian streak is alive and well. The press made him into an underdog, and gave him all the attention he could have wanted to focus his charisma on an audience.

@zero: I'm sorry about your home situation and I'm sorry this election is so close but don't lose hope. WW 1, WW 2, the cold war, 9/11. We've weathered many storms. Humanity's best quality is that no matter the horror, no matter the odds we overcome. There are 200 other nations out there and a lot of the big ones are moving in the right direction. China and India know they can't govern ash so they're working hard to build a more sustainable future.

@Zeropoint; this is not the mental health thread. We're not exactly qualified to give you advice, or even help you since we have no idea where you are. All we can say is you'll wake up the same as you always do tomorrow, and the world will move on.

So, apparently the African American vote only went 88% for Clinton and the Latino vote went 65% for her, according to 538.

The sick thing? My family would probably benefit from a Trump presidency, at least in the short term. We're affluent enough to qualify for his tax breaks. Doesn't make up for...everything else.

I'm thinking of a trip to Antarctica.

Best-case scenario: I find Captain America frozen in the ice.

Average-case scenario: I get lost for four years and I don't have to deal directly with Trump. I would still have a SHITTON of mistrust towards older white people, but I'd take what I can get.

Worst-case scenario: I freeze to death. At least I don't have to deal directly with Trump.

I am seriously considering moving from Florida though. They've gone completely red all across the board and I don't think I can live here and start a family long term.

I really really do not see us weathering this one, he will have complete control over the government and nothing can stop the policies he plans to enact. Especially the Supreme Court judges will doom women's rights for decades, gay rights as well. As well as the economic policies that will devastate the US economy and the rest of the world's.

That's not even getting into Foreign Policy...

All things aside, is anyone else shocked at how wrong the polls turned out to be. Lots of folks will be looking for a job once this is done, I bet.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.
