The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes, yes he does. And a significant chunk of the American public still voted from him. After he mocked after marginalized group in society. After he bragged about committing sexual assault. After he planned to sell the world to Russia.

I'm sharing a continent with a bunch of savages.

Maybe there's a lot of hidden Klansmen and Nazis in the country. How many of those people normally vote?

I'm really scared for all my friends who are Muslim, trans, female, Latin, poor, goddamn.

Same here.

The only solace I can take is the hope that Totemic Hero is right and he won't be re-elected but holy fuck are those four years going to suck for minorities.

@Alley Oop: I wasn't this morning. I trusted the American people. :( I didn't think they would actually do it just because all the talk has been about Trump. But because he was on TV more now he will be our generations awful Reagan. Great.

This just proves the US is no better than their southern neighbors Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

I knew we sucked. But everybody told me to expect a landslide. I knew we were bad, but I didn't think we were like this.

So how are we going to handle 2020 polling wise? Can they ever be trusted again after this?

That the rust belt has moved right isn't surprising, that it has moved this much...

I haven't seen much info on overall voting pop but I wouldn't be surprised if it was low compared to 08/12

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

California doesn't matter, due to the electoral college.

Yeah Michigan and Wisconsin aren't looking good, it's not over yet but to far to close. Detroit apparently still isn't in yet and has the votes to swing it, if Clinton can pull one of them back and then grab Nevada and New Hampshire that might do it I need to run the maths.

We need two more Virginia style situations, fingers crossed.

The Hitler-Trump comparison works in that they got their edge thanks to the mainstream conservatives thinking they could be controlled.

Really though how could so many polls get it all wrong? Even Trump's own polls were saying he was going to lose.

I think one of the scariest things about a Trump presidency is that America will be one obesity-induced heart attack away from a Pence presidency.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.
