The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I am surprisingly anxious about this. I don't usually get anxious about elections.

Alright, so just to describe the map I made: I had all of Clinton's strongholds - the so-called "firewall" blue and all swing states that are currently red as red. I also gave Trump all the electoral votes that don't just go to the winner of the state. Then I gave him Michigan.

That's an exact draw, 269-269. So it would be the House and Senate electing Trump and Pence (respectively).

That said, I don't currently think Michigan will swing. If it does, then yes, we're fucked. (You know, assuming Clinton doesn't win those loose votes or Florida.)

On the other hand, if Clinton indeed wins despite losing most swing states, Nate Silver will officially become God.

But if Trump wins, he will be out of a job. Basically, his employment future hangs in the results in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Pence is a hard evangelical. In some ways that's scarier than Trump.

This is getting worse and worse. An hour ago I honestly believed Clinton would win. Now...

So exit polls are evidently wrong right? How accurate were they in 2012? My understanding was they were fairly accurate.

The worst part is that the Republicans will basically claim a divine mandate if Trump barely wins. Despite saying that Clinton would be stone walled if she won in a landslide even.

That entire party is corrupt and evil, top to bottom. We should stop pretending otherwise.

EDIT: At least Pence won't threaten NATO, and can be trusted with the nuclear triad.

I sincerely hope we don't get another Australian election and Clinton does not declare defeat before it's over. Whoever wins will mean the world changing, there's far too much at stake to give up.

I was watching a French show, where the public was entirely made of American students in Paris. Some of them started to cry when they saw Ohio going to Trump. There was exactly one person in the audience rooting (openly) for Trump, and he was, just for fun, Russian-American.

There was one exit poll in the 2008 primaries that reported Obama won when it went Hillary, but otherwise they've been said to be really reliable.

Even if we still scrape together a victory, we just get to do this all again in four years with somebody worse.

I want to take Solace in the presidents words. But I think "Of Course the sun will rise for me tomorrow. I'm a white mid-middle class college student. What about those Muslim kids, or Latino people living in poverty trying to make things better for themselves" also I'm not sure everybody voting for Trump deserves respect.

Clinton will concede, she respects the democratic process. Trump doesn't.

Didn't Trump threaten assassination or hint that Clinton would be murdered? Sounds pretty hateful to me.

I am just really confused by the results we're seeing now. Hell, Trump's internal polling said he would fucking lose! How does everyone get it wrong? If Hillary was barely ahead I would understand but that doesn't seem to be happening. Again, it almost makes me think there was some kind of fraud committed. None of this makes any sense.

Trump will do something like demand a recount if he doesn't win.
