The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The cities of both the Midwest and New Hampshire have yet to finish counting yet, that's a lot of Democrat vote that's not come in yet.

@Amber: When I said "can be president" I mean that in the sense that there is nothing legally preventing (as far as I am aware of) third parties from earning the position. Obama, since he's had two terms, can't be president again even if he were to suddenly win popular vote.

We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.

Yeah, going by CNN, a lot of counties that went blue in 2012 haven't been called yet.

While it's worrisome that Trump's slightly ahead in Michigan, keep in mind that most of the votes in Detroit and it's surrounding areas haven't come in yet.

I would try to avoid panicking until the urban vote has been counted. If I've learned anything from elections, it's often not remotely over until the vast majority of votes have been called.

Logistical question here: why does a state as small and lightly populated as New Hampshire take so long to count?

You sure, Bestof? Some of those midwest county maps don't look good at all.

Check this. It's the 2012 results by county. Obama ended up winning by a pretty comfortable margin.

Is there still hope in Florida?

Not likely. Pretty much every county is accounted for save for Broward, which Clinton is leading. But it's already been tallied to like 75% so the chances of some swing is slim to none.

Vote counting is done by country so the size of the state doesn't actually matter, it's just if they have tightly packed counties or not.

Bestof, this election has seen a rather large voter shift - rural voter turnout is up and the Midwest is whiter and older than average.
