The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If you have legit, diagnosed anxiety issues, the best thing you can probably do tonight is find a book, game or non-election TV show and escape into that till you can go to bed. Then if the world has gone to hell tomorrow at least you'll be well rested.

Those two things don't really line up. I thought all the "If not Bernie than Gary" people were done.

[up][up]Because most of those idiots probably wouldn't have voted for her anyway? What reason is there to think they're not taking votes away from Trump?

I'd only start panicking if Virginia and Ohio go Trump. That would be kind of devastating.

I really didn't expect Trump to get this far. I knew he had vocal and hateful supporters, but I thought we were better than this, that enough people actually cared about this country to stop a demagogue like him from grabbing power.

Fuck, I don't know what I'll do with myself if he wins. I've got mounds of college debt, severe anxiety and depression, no skills, no degree, no job, I'm effectively mooching off of my family, and a Hillary victory was my only hope of potentially making a living and becoming a productive member of society through improved healthcare and education. If Trump wins, I can kiss my future, maybe even my life goodbye right here and now.

Who pisses away their vote on a fucking third-party candidate in this election?
They say nonsense to themselves like: "I need to take a stand or nothing will change! Third parties have a chance!"

"Both major parties suck, I'm going to vote for people who only have no 'dirt' on them because they haven't done much of anything, and never bother trying to gain support in the other 3 years of the election cycle"

"I can't morally vote for Hillary because [some ridiculous Republican propaganda], but am sheltered enough to think that my choice won't hurt people." ?

Clinton's down only 10K in Virginia, and her votes have been increasing. I think it's safe to call Virginia for Hillary. Trump put up a good fight there, though.

Kind of surprised that nobody in the thread cares for Trump in the slightest, though I probably shouldn't be.

Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin were projected fairly safe-ish blue before election night.

Remember that smaller districts can report vote tallies sooner. Urban polling stations take longer to get there.

We had a troll in here earlier today talking Trump, but nobody else that I've seen. Doesn't surprise me, TVT's a pretty progressive site. The assholes tend to get weeded out by the moderators.

Only 1 Dem gain so far (Duckworth in Illinois). 538 has Republicans at 70% chance of retaining it.
