The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]There is no reasonable basis for California going to Trump, between its strong liberalism and high minority population.

Would it be accurate to assume Hillary has California in the bag?
Yes. California is functionally a one party state run by the Democrats.

So then HRC has another 55 electoral votes that aren't being counted yet. That would put her ahead.

You can count Washington and Oregon in there too. The West Coast is always reliably Democrat.

Guys, I can't take this anymore. Imma check back in 4 hours. If we get a Trump presidency...

Guess I'm not going back home from work overseas this year. Or maybe ever.

It is terrifying that so many people think someone like Trump would be the president we need.

And I don't get being pissed at Johnson voters. Did you think that was a particular group likely to go Hilary anyway? If it were Jill Stein it would be a different story.

Oh, Ferg, one thing I think is legally important for popular vote is if your particular party gets federal funding (I forget the threshold). It's way more relevant for third parties like the Libertarians.

Most Johnson votes are Republicans that didn't want to vote for Trump, but couldn't bring themselves to vote for Clinton — else the sort who were going to vote third party no matter what. It's highly unlikely that Johnson poached many votes from Clinton.
