The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Calling supporting Trump repugnant=/=calling it a crime.
Well if raw passion is anything to go by, the implication is that it should be one.

A random thought, what happens if HRC wins but she and Kaine are then somehow rendered unable to serve before the confirmation? I've heard a juuuuust-a-little-loony conspiracies by some republicans I know that they'll somehow manage to have them both jailed before the confirmation and replace them with the speaker of the house.

[up][up] Nah, I wouldn't want anyone jailed for voting Trump or anything.

I would however have a much lower opinion of them after the fact. If they were voting for say Mc Cain, Romney or W Bush that would be one thing but Trump is not comparable to any of those men.

[up] Are they in any position to actually do anything about it?

First exit polls are coming soon.

On a good note, turnout is high in key states.

It begins...

Voted this morning; was surprised to find Virginia's back to using paper ballots, but this is probably a good year to have that kind of trail.

Impeachment (as in the actual trial) needs 2/3rd of the Senate...so not really?

The DNC and RNC already have rules in place for if that were to happen. Short answer - it appear yes, conceivably a Republican controlled House could do that after the Electoral College actually meets in early December (prior to the meeting, the DNC can instruct their electors to vote for a new candidate they provide).

@nervmeister

Stop inventing things. No one has said that voting for Trump should land you in jail. It earns you our utter contempt, but not a prison sentence.

That's probably a good sign, it's usually been close but Trump hasn't truly been ahead since the conventions.

Not surprising in this polarized cycle either.

Only 4 in 10 voters want "change", so I guess that's good for Clinton if her base turns out.

I just went third party because of my mom watching over me shoulder. I wanted to vote Clinton, honest, I did, but my mother.........would have killed me.

So....just kinda filled out the form, and my sister in America will be sending it to the polls and what not. Very complicated process.

Please allow me to introduce myself, I am a man of wealth and taste. Nice to meet you, hope you can guess my name.

You could sue her for voter intimidation.

Mind, it does feel like an ass hole move to me.

Your mother really shouldn't have been looking over your shoulder. Inferring with other people's votes like that is actually illegal. Because of situations like yours.

[up][up][up]If your mother did induce/intimidate you...she broke the law. Not trying to start anything, and what's done is done but...

Exit polls show that more people trust Clinton over Trump (44% vs 37%).

What, no! She didn't do that!

I just didn't want her to be mad at me. Like, she didn't intimidate me into not voting for Clinton, but I just didn't want her to be mad or disappointed in me.

By standing over your shoulder or even being in the same room and you changing your intended vote, she has.

Then just don't tell her how you voted. Like, if she's actually watching you vote and seeing what you're doing, that's voter intimidation.
