The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Heh, I just had an amusing thought. It's nothing intentional in terms of the election, just a funny coincidence:

Today is the release of the newest book in the long-running Safehold series. The reason that sparked a thought relevant here is because the book's Big Bad is a bigoted, privilaged sonuvabitch with a nasty habit of projecting his faults on to others and whose actions have a tendency to backfire on his own side.

Sound familiar?

The funny thing is, this guy's last name is "Clyntahn", which given the book's tendency for odd spellings due to a millennium of language drift, is likely derived from "Clinton".

I voted around 8 in the morning, was the first time I've ever seen a line of any sort in the small suburban town where I've lived on and off for the past 15 years. The line was short and I was out within minutes. Now I'm occasionally checking in from school, where I'll be until 9-9:30 tonight.

Turkey slipping into authoritarianism.

Civil wars in Syria and Yemen.

Fascists coming to power in Eastern Europe.

Russia on the rise.

Philippines falling under a bullying demagogue.

The United Kingdom bailing on the EU.

A psychotic would-be caliphate still existing in Iraq.

This election isn't just about the United States. Today we're sending a message to the rest of society. Are we going to join the downward spiral of degeneracy that has afflicted so much of the world? Are we going to let the bigotry and ignorance of pseudo-patriots rule the nation?

Time to put your money where your mouth is, America. Pull away from the darkness within and take a stand against the darkness without. Hold the line.

So did the militias were all talk and no act or did they actually do something stupid?

[up]Don't forget the Brazilian president getting impeached by the same people who had a hand in the reason why.

Still very early - West Coast probably opened up for an hour or 2. Besides, minorities and poor are more likely to vote near closing because of their work schedules - such militia would be more likely to do something then rather than now.

Although 538's liveblog already has a picture of some pro-Trump guy at an elementary school/polling place with a sidearm in Delaware.

Plenty of time for people to do all sorts of stupid things. Chances are, any militias showing up later in the day would also be pretty drunk, which does not help.

Still, it's quite possible they'll just not do anything, or not show up at all. Who knows.

[up][up][up][up]There's also the evangelical and fascistic right-wing in Brazil gaining power by appealing to the leftist's government incompetence and corruption, while of course burying their own.

That's actually something I was going to mention, I don't want the US to send a message that other people like Trump deserve to have power. [nja]

Any current stats on Virginia?

My homestate has changed from Red to blue over the last 2 elections, so I was wondering if its the same.

I do wonder what caused the shift to blue from red for Virginia, anyway.

Oh, and I already sent in my absentee ballot in october for all democrat.

Angelus/ Draghinazzo: Thanks for the info. I knew something was going on in Brazil, but I didn't want to say anything less it turned out I was grossly misinformed.

"That's actually something I was going to mention, I don't want the US to send a message that other people like Trump deserve to have power."

Good point. We stop it here and now, we can discourage a domino effect hitting other vulnerable countries.

Something concerning from 538's liveblog:

A friend in Chicago reports some pretty disturbing events from the polls this morning. She’s African-American and her husband is white, and they had pretty different experiences at their voting location. She was asked for a photo ID; he wasn’t. She only received part of her ballot at first, and they gave her the other half after she’d already started filling out the first part. Her husband also reported that the only other white voter in line, a man wearing a suit, was invited to cut in line because he was clearly “in a hurry.” (The man declined.) I have no idea if this is representative of what’s happening elsewhere, but it’s not encouraging.

Someone mentioned Virginia. Fivethirtyeight are pretty confident the polls have it going Democrat this time, at least in the Presidential vote. It's at 85% for Clinton. I see that Virginia doesn't have a Senate seat in play this time around.

Fucking hell. I swear to God, if Trump wins the White House through sheer cheating and intimidation...

Wait, what am I saying, that's been the basis of his entire campaign thus far.

[up] What I'm concerned about is this dissuading other voters from going through with it. The additional hassle might prove too much for some of the less passionate ones.

Any reason Virginia has become Democrat? I know that a lot of Asian's, partcularly Indian populations have blown up here, at least. That might have something to do with it.

Federal workers who commute into DC/work elsewhere in the federal government are a growing part of the population, plus there's the fact that Clinton's running mate is the former governor.

I do wonder what caused the shift to blue from red for Virginia, anyway.

Becoming a suburban home for people working in DC. Those people pulled Virginia so blue it's on the edge of being considered reliably blue. Polls have had Clinton leading Trump by 6-9 points there at times.

I recall hearing that Kaine was quite popular in the state due to his track record running the state.

In which Kaine winds up second in line to a 99-year old woman for polling.

Trump got booed at his polling place.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Speaking for myself, FB has been such a swamp of ignorance and idiotic apathy this election cycle. Multiple people I used to be relatively close to years ago either buying into "NEVER HILLARY/CORPORATE PUPPET/insert wikileaks "leak" here" , implying both candidates are equally bad or tasteless jokes based on things Trump's done and said. I only saw like two people who seemed to have any kind of reason or social responsibility. I don't really talk to any of them on a regular basis these days but it's been very disappointing.

Today has been, as you might imagine, especially bad to the point I'm considering just not visiting the site for like a month or so until this all blows over.
