The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

How is he the lesser of two evils?

How is Hillary Clinton even remotely close to evil?

Donald Trump's a diplomatic disaster, as numerous trips abroad have recently proved.

He's promised to revoke citizenships of naturalized citizens and deport them. This one personally affects me.

His running mate is America's greatest Heteronormative Crusader and champion of destroying lgbt rights. This one affects me personnally as well.

He has bragged about sexual assault.

He has time and again contracted people to work and then refused to pay them because hiring a lawyer to challenge his contractors in court is cheaper

[up][up][up] You could have at least given a more specific answer.

Did you want the tax cut? The mass deportations? The return of torture? The sanctioning of war crimes? Stop and frisk? Toll booths on almost every major road and highway? The end of freedom of the press? Gay conversion camps?

This why I like post totals showing up on forums, cuz if you guys had seen that his only posts are these two you'd know to just ignore.

If someone is still willing to vote for someone like Trump at this stage in our election cycle, then I doubt there's anything that can be done to dissuade them, because you can't use reason to defeat that which is inherently unreasonable. Trump is a liar, a bigot, an egomaniac, and has bragged about his ability to sexually assault women free of consequence.

If someone so utterly, self-evidently vile is considered worthy of your vote, then...actually, [up][up] is probably the best course of action. Let's just move on.

It's hard not to react vehemently when someone expresses support for Drumpf.

I noticed that the troll didn't specify what exactly he sees in Trump. Just broad statements about being a "the best candidate of our time"

So I voted Democrat across the board today. I was surprised to see a Democrat Representative and Senator ballot; I had simply assumed they'd be running unopposed here in Alabama. All the local positions are unopposed Republicans, surprise, surprise. There were also local and state issues; apparently in Alabama we vote on every damn new law passed? One of the "Amendments" to the 1901 Alabama constitution HEY  is for when the entire state votes on legislation that only affects one county, that county's votes are given extra weight.

There was also an "Amendment to amendment" being voted on.

Voted this morning with no issues. Unfortunately the only state-specific question on the ballot was about lawmakers deciding their own salaries. No question about legalizing marijuana that other states are apparently getting.

The amendment I voted for was whether a state Attorney general appointed by the governor had to be approved by their party. I voted against it

Voted straight Democrat across the board, except for one local position that was a Republican running unopposed. I wrote in Bruce Wayne for that one.

I left most of those blank. Will that count as an abstain vote, or will that invalidate my ballot?

I don't think it'll invalidate your ballot - you should be fine.

Leaving something blank means you abstain. Theoretically I think you could turn in a blank ballot to show you don't like any candidate in any of the races.

Another reminder to not freak out if one candidate pulls ahead in a state. The other's strongholds might not be reporting yet.

God it'd be hilarious if my vote made a difference, and like, Alabama sent a Democratic senator or something.

God I would love that.

Anyway, my district's voting ends at 7pm central, and they'll post results soon thereafter.

I know I don't post here much, but here is what I'm thinking the Election is going to look like. I'm also expecting a Democrat Senate (between +2 (4) Seats and +6 (8) Seats). I haven't been paying too much attention to the House Elections, but I'm expecting it to remain Republican.

I'll be voting for Gary Johnson and his Libertarian Buddies today.
