The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Im guessing Clinton wins with between 320 to 340 electoral votes, Democrats take the Senate with 52 senators. The House stays solidly red, but even during Clinton's best moments it was incredibly unlikely to flip.

Best to everyone, good luck out there.

It's only 7 and the school across from my house (which is where I'm voting) is already full of cars.

Time to go vote!

Just got back from voting in Suburbia's Shit-Slicked Asshole rural Pennsylvania. Got to the polling place just after 7 AM, and the lines were all the way out the door.

All I can do now is wait, and hope and have a nice sturdy escape rope ready in case of the worst.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

Yet again just about everyone I know who's been vocally opposed to Trump is now saying that they're abstaining from voting. I sincerely hope the attitude doesn't extend to the rest of NC, or the state is fucked for yet another cycle.

CNN reports that turnout appears to be up in Florida. That's something at least.

Seriously. All of that "I'm not voting because I don't like either candidate" BS is stupid.

[up]Apathy is easier than giving a damn, I will admit.

EDIT: Though maybe some are in truth in severe doubt, and it's the fear of making the "wrong choice" (neutrally speaking) that's holding them back.

I voted!

My dad took me to the polling place- he said he's never seen it so busy in all his life. I guess the stakes are just that much higher.

A bit unrelated but.

Do you folks over there see the next election race in 4 years being like this one?

I hope not.

Since I'll be over 30 by then I don't want to risk having a heart attack.

Apparently there's also a public transportation strike in Philadelphia, which doesn't help at all.
Didn't they agree to return to work on election day just to avoid that problem?

Really, one of the few things I like from my country is that we have mandatory voting.
I dislike mandatory voting on principle. You just get a lot of resentful, low-information voters throwing their ballot in because they have to. If someone literally doesn't care enough to vote, then I'm happier with their opinion not being counted.

@Angelus: I'm pretty sure turning 30 isn't a magical switch that somehow makes you instantly vulnerable to issues like heart failure. If you're healthy now, you'll probably be fairly healthy then.

Kanye West would make it interesting, that much is true. Of course, he most likely would be running with a D next to his name, so the only way he gets past the primaries is if Hillary is found to be a wash and dropped by her own party after the first term.

In my country we have obligatory vote but if you don't want to vote for anyone, you can just "vote void", which is effectively the same as abstaining.

I'd like to imagine that being forced to show up at the ballot box would make citizens more engaged but I'm not sure that's true in practice. Aussies seem more concerned about drop bears then whichever shitwhistle is currently running the show.

The (i imagine) final update for 538 has clinton at 71% and the senate still in a toss up. They'll also be live blogging all damn day.

considering whether trump wins or not, he's probably gonna go for a re/election next year

and if hillary's gonna go at it again i wouldn't be surprised if there's some chaos early on in the vote, before the nominees are decided

I understand that mandatory voting also increases the risk of donkey voting (just voting for whoever is at the top of the list and going down in order just to get it over with).

I'm not the only one who's thought with morbid fascination of successive Trump and Kanye inaugurations (the one would almost make the other plausible, if the planet survived long enough). Hopefully today is the last day I can consider this a possibility.

Instead, let's all just sit and silently pray the the nuclear codes don't fall into the hands of a depraved, unapologetic, and toxically ignorant bigot with no sense of decency or restraint. I really, really don't want to believe that we're so far gone as a country for that to happen.

Voted this morning. My state is pretty much guaranteed to go blue no matter what, but it's all I can do at this point.
