Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Delusional policies" sums up the Libertarian platform quite nicely. In terms of economic policy, it's actually worse than Trump's plans.
Disgusted, but not surprisedHow? I thought the polls didn't open until the morning.
There are a few towns in rural NH that vote at midnight for the sake of tradition.

It's weird. This is the first time I ever felt gut wrenching fear over an election. I didn't even feel this stressed when Dubya was up for re-election (though in hindsight maybe I should have been worried).

Disgusted, but not surprisedWell this is the most important election in decades if your left-leaning. Control of the supreme court will fundamentally reshape america. And not getting trump as president is always nice, i guess.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Playing the role of a closer, Eichenwald went off on a Twitterstorm of his research that outlines the horrifying deals that should eliminate Trump’s business prowess as a qualification for the White House.
What follows after the quoted portion is over 100 tweets on Eichenwald's twitter detailing all sorts of Trump doings and dealings.

I feel far more tense about this election than I did in '08 and '12.

I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyHey! Don't let mental illness be an excuse for Trump!
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Agreed - too much stigma there. What matters is that he's a bigot and an asshole.
Oh God! Natural light!Hey guys, I really hope there's no violence tomorrow, regardless of the result, but (God forbid) if there is please stay safe out there.

EDIT: 538 has the Dems at less than 50% chance to take the Senate now. Before the Comey BS it was at like 70%. Fuck that bullshit.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonI'm going to go crazy on the results and predict a goddamn landslide for Clinton. (she gets MO thanks to down-ballot "drag" from Kander).
EDIT: damn links, sometimes they're annoying to fix.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVThat's too optimistic even before Comey deciding the Hatch act doesn't apply to him.
And Kender, awesome as he is, has dropped off in the polls lately.

A likely timeline of events. Of note is that if Trump pulls ahead in E Vs because his safe states close first, don't panic.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. How long until it is over?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. Here's my map. As you can see it's basically the same as 538 - and also the most common map you'll have seen in the last couple of weeks (or more).
It's a comfortable victory for Clinton, with the entire firewall holding and some of the swing states going her way (barely).
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. My wife reports very long lines at our polling place. It's a good sign for voter turnout, at least.

Bah, looks like my co-worker cancelled, I'll have to head in just when they're about to call it.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I was very disappointed when I found out Pennsylvania has no early voting. It's one of the biggest states, in terms of population, and a very important one in every election. It really should have early voting.
Apparently there's also a public transportation strike in Philadelphia, which doesn't help at all. It's going to disproportionately affect poorer voters, who might rely on public transportation to get to the voting stations in the first place; and when they get there, because everyone's having trouble traveling, it's likely that there will be very long queues. This will discourage voters, some of whom might opt out. That, obviously, is an advantage for Trump and down-ticket Republicans.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
The first votes are in in Dixville Notch, NH! Clinton is currently leading there, for those who cares.
