The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Republicans have taken a likely razor thin lead in Colorado's early voting, however they are underperforming their results from 2012 (Romney did much better than Trump, but still lost the state handily to Obama) so its probably not much to worry about if people vote tomorrow.

[up][up] Heck, Trump's lead in Texas even wavered for a while, though there's no real chance it will turn blue this cycle. Changing demographics and all that.

This conversation only affirms my belief that we need serious voting reform after this election.

[up] Dealing with gerrymandering is supposedly on Barack Obama's to-do list after he leaves office.

And of course we need to eliminate all of the GOP's voter suppression shenanigans.

We must have.

Anyway, I had a question: can anybody give me a good list of progressive items on Hillary's agenda? I'm trying to present an argument to a few people, and I think it'd be best if I had some stuff to get behind her on.

... You seem to have. They're even sharing a post number. See what happens if you try to edit yours, Karkat.

But: here's the issues page on her website. Probably you can find some progressive views there.

It includes dramatically expanded renewable energy, reduced oil dependency, massive infrastructure work, and increased college availability.

Included in that is something along the lines of 3/4 to 4/5ths of Sanders' platform. Point them towards the DNC platform as well.

Claiming that his health care plan would save more money on prescription drugs than what the entire country pays total on prescription drugs is the most famous one.

The thing that made me glad that Sanders wasn't going to win the primary, as much as I think we need a major push in a socialist direction, is when he was asked a question about politics in South America and his reply was that he didn't care or couldn't answer because he was running to be President of the US, not a president in South America.

[up][up]That's almost the same answer he gave when asked about how Vermont nuclear policy would effect the town in Texas where the waste would get dumped. Response: "I'm running for reelection in Vermont".

However likeable he might be at the personal level, Sanders was bad at seeing beyond the end of his own nose, or outside the demographic he was trying to appeal to at any given time.

Sanders actually had policies. Stein had delusions.

I think even Fox (who has an irrational hatred of Sanders) would give that one to Sanders. Not only does he have policy but he also believes in science, isn't pro-Russia and lacks ties to big business.
