Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You can blame Breibart and Alex Jones for being contributors since the Trump was announced to run.
Also, they have always been there, Stromfront, Breibart, Prison Planet, Zero Hedge and /pol/ were a festering extremist right shithole that were festering and gathering their followers just waiting for a chance to surface and let the world see their shit.
Trump was the perfect candidate for them, not only Trump resonated with closet and overt racists he implicitly catered to them and by joining forces with Bannon from Breibart cemented the unholy union of racists, misogynists and an annoying orange.

More specificaly, the Tea Partiers that actually got to power did so off the back of the 2008 recession, particularly the 2010 midterms. They themselves were not the alt-right but they were more than willing to exploit the polarization of conservative media and hatred of Obama. Then things continued to not get better with the Tea Party candidates in office, and then suddenly you have Trump as the new outsider.

@Alley, do you mean Korra's status as a Contested Sequel or?
Stand Fast, Stand Strong, Stand TogetherI think he/she(?) means Amon and the Equalists. The first season had a lot of political themes and Amon, the main villain, was a dystopian far left sort. I was never really involved with the fandom aspect of the show, however.
The writers were also trying to do some Grey-and-Grey Morality stuff trying to point out both sides having legit issues, with shall we say mixed results.

People worshipped the Equalists to an insane degree even though the show gave no good in-universe justification for their viewpoint, and made favorable comparisons to real life Marxists who were guilty of Bad Shit (TM), while bashing on Korra for being a "white savior" or "white bitch in brown skin" somehow. Gisei Nashi Ni themself was directly involved in a ton of fandom drama like spearheading witchhunts against artists for whitewashing Korra in fanart where it turned out it was actually just artistic license with pastels/lighting effects (here's one example
◊), and anyone who came to the artists' defense or tried to explain color theory got labeled a racist derailer and started getting hate messages too, harassing a Latina fan who was on the lighter-skinned side for cosplaying as Korra because it's "appropriating characters who "belong to POC", plus the more purely fandom-related insane ship warring, character stanning, and character hate.
The worst part was Gisei Nashi Ni was incredibly popular and had a huge squad of defenders and like-minded people who would make a huge wankpile out of the fandom even when they weren't doing anything directly. They were also likely indirectly responsible for a lot of the doxxing going on in that fandom, as it wasn't until later that it acquired its current stigma.
By the way it's "she", though I don't really care

That does sound like a real shit show. I thought the whole Equalist thing was funny because my UK friends told me that bender was slang for gay people, making all of the speeches sound pretty ridiculous
See it's this kind of thing that leads to all the SJW hate in other corners of the internet and makes me facepalm. Stop Helping Me at it's finest.

Stand Fast, Stand Strong, Stand TogetherSo this is it. This is it. We're just a day away from election day. This is it. It's finally happening. Judgement Day is coming, the Angels and Demons are about to come down to Earth to duke it out, Satan will rise to do battle with God for one last time, the Anti-Christ will arise to finally confront The Second Coming of Jesus Christ. (Damn, religious mythology is cool.)
This feels like you're about to take a final exam and you think you COULD get something good form this but you still think you're going to screw it up and you go through the shit sweating bullets and when you finally get through the damn thing, all you can think is, "well, at least it's over. Good or bad, it's over."
That's what this election feels like. A stomach-churning, sweat-inducing combination of dread, despair, anticipation, and, above all, a wish for it to be OVER!

Not entirely and it likely never will. Fandom has always been home to hardcore leftist elements, partly because it's considered a safe place for legitimately marginalized people to express themselves (which is a good thing). Thing is, that plus fandom's inherently cliquish and personal nature, made many times worse by Tumblr's absolute lack of moderation and shitty programming, also makes it a breeding ground for many leftist forms of extremism. Not to mention it's common for fans to disguise personal, less political opinions as such due to the treatment of serious social issues as fandom "fads" in an effort to out-holier-than-thou each other.
And this kind of fandom drama has been around since the Livejournal era (RIP Fandom_Wank) and still continues to this day (see the Voltron: Legendary Defender and Steven Universe fandoms for example). They've just gotten a little smarter about it in some ways. And yes, while sometimes it does lead to actual positive change and awareness of issues it's incredibly frustrating to people who actually care about these issues and don't want to see them hijacked for lengthy essays on why so-and-so character and their fans are abusive and deserve to die.

I'm glad I completely missed that and enjoyed Korra entirely through TV Tropes, like every other show.
This forum is sane.
And Equalists were a stupid, Randian concept, awesomely executed. They were scary, interesting, competent, and highly motivated. Amon was very memorable.

Oh God! Natural light! So, CNN is doing some doomsaying regarding Clinton's chances in North Carolina; where she appears to have underperformed Obama in early voting whereas Trump has done better than Romney (Mitt went on to win the state despite an early voting lead by Obama). The turnout among African Americans and young Democrats is also down from 2012.

Please, let those numbers in Florida be accurate...

Ah, Deadpool murder montage music. Perfect. I think I'm actually going to play some of my favorite Ace Attorney music if Clinton wins.

I...I didn't think that The Legend of Korra would call down such...fire. Personally, I think it's a pretty good show. Not as good as The Last Airbender but that was a damn good show. Not perfect but it was good. To think that such madness lurked in the hearts of man...I knew people were throwing shit over Korrax Asami but this just came out of left field for me.

Yes, this forum is sane. That's why I just compared Election day to the Biblical Armageddon.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Reviewing my sample ballot now - I get tomorrow off per state law. Voting on POTUS/VPOTUS (9 options), House Rep (7 options), Surrogate Court (2 options), freeholders (4 choose 2), township committee (4 choose 2), School Board (2 choose 2), Question 1 on Amendment to allow casino gambling in "two other counties in this state other than Atlantic", Question 2 on Amendment to force dedication of most recent gas tax hike (~23 cents/gallon) into transportation projects.
The damned queen and the relentless knight. So looking at that Fine Bros video someone posted, though I've heard the stuff about Hilary before, I've never actually heard fervently Trump people. Listening to those old white guys hang on eat up every word he says is kind of mystifying.

The Tea Party threatens other republicans with primary challenges if they step out of their party line or try to work across the aisle, basically. It's been successful enough that even a threat of it has been enough to scare legislators into behaving.
