There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Eh, I've said a few times that the US needs to be more unitary.
Also, I just saw the stupidest thing ever on Facebook. It was an image macro where it talked about "Clinton cancelled a speech event after it rained, while Trump came back to the stage after an assassination attempt" in all seriousness.
For context, the "assassination attempt" was that dude with the sign from yesterday.
TBH, I am genuinely worried about the future of the country with the Republicans as they are. They've abandoned all pretense of trying to govern if they don't get their way. Say what you will about the many, many, many failings of the United States over its 200+ years of existence, it’s largely been pretty stable. And that's because the losing party in its elections respects the legitimacy of the other political party to govern. That goes back to John Adams.
If Republicans refuse to do such basic things as confirm any Supreme Court justice and seek to impeach Hillary Clinton the moment she takes office for made up “crimes,” how does this nation continue as a unified entity? we're seeing them attempting to delegitimize the Democratic party, and that is a very, very worrisome thing.
We need two sane and rational parties to make the Republic run, and the Republicans were set down this path since 1964.

That's the issue. We need rational differences of opinions. William F Buckley, pompous bore that he was, at least came at conservatism with the desire for there to be an intellectual framework beneath it.
But the party has gone off the rails, to quote Charles Johnson, into the bushes and over the cliff. And the media keeps propping them up like they have credibility, while the far left attacks the Democrats and Obama as the program.
Take McMullin...I don't agree with him on much, but the man is a sane, policy-oriented conservative if nothing else trying to at least win one state on that. And an attack that his mom is a lesbian is actually effective? As of right now, the Republicans cannot and will not govern, so the only option I see is to 1964 them, with a Democratic Presidency, Democratic house and Democratic senate supermajority so they can't get a say, with a left-leaning Supreme Court to boot.
There's a lot of complexity to some of them as well, especially Prop 64 for Marijuana, and even Prop 60's condom requirement in porn is complicated.
Personally, I think Prop 61 on drug prices is another big one, along with Prop 62 to repeal the death penalty (vs. Prop 66 to speed up the process).

Guardian interview with the man who raised the "Republicans Against Trump" sign
. If anything it makes the Trump supporters look even worse. Yet his own thoughts on them put him several tiers above them, if not the rest of us.
Initially, there was the expected reaction of people around him booing, he said. “And then all of a sudden people next to me are starting to get violent; they’re grabbing at my arm, trying to rip the sign out of my hand,” he said.
He said he could not be sure but “it looked like” Trump was pointing at him, and may have been “instigating something”. Either way, the crowd piled on him, he said, kicking, punching, holding him on the ground and grabbing his testicles.
He said he was a wrestler in his youth and used his training to turn his head to the side to maintain an airway open as he was being choked by one man who had him in a headlock. “But there were people wrenching on my neck they could have strangled me to death,” he added.
Crites said when he was on the ground he heard someone yell “something about a gun” and he kept telling those on top of him that he had merely been holding a sign.
While he was surprised at what occurred at the rally, Crites he said he did not blame the crowd for his treatment. “I like these people,” he said. “These are my fellow Americans. I love these people. I understand that they came here because they’re patriotic, they want to do good for their country.”
He added: “The people who attacked me – I’m not blaming them. I’m blaming Donald Trump’s hate rhetoric.”
“My heart still aches for what this nation could potentially do by electing him,” he added. “That hurts me much more than any of this violence.”
“The fact that I got beat up today, that’s just showing what he’s doing to his crowds. But I just want people to understand I’m going to be OK, but now what’s more important is if the country going to be OK? So do your part and vote.”
Also, I present you more deplorableness
.
Re: the guy with the Republicans Against Trump sign: I am impressed by his compassion and understanding. To be blunt, more people should be like that.

Do not obey in advance.
The sad thing is, he registered as a Republican in 2011 under the notion that the GOP was a party that stood for conservative fiscal responsibility.
Now the current GOP nominee and platform have an idiotic economic plan that would add trillions to our national debt. Not very conservative or responsible.
Disgusted, but not surprisedStrong earthquake shakes central Oklahoma causing 'significant' damage
The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake struck at 7:44pm CST, with an epicenter located one mile west of Cushing, about 50 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. It initially measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.3.
Cushing, which has a population of about 7,900, bills itself as the Pipeline Crossroads of the World. It is home to the Cushing Tank Farm, a massive oil storage facility that’s touted as the world’s largest.
The quake was felt as far away as Kansas City, Missouri, and Little Rock, Arkansas.
The Cushing Police Department reported “quite of bit of damage” from the earthquake and said parts of downtown were being evacuated due to gas leaks. Cushing High School announced it would be closed on Monday.
Images on social media showed major damage to buildings.
One report suggested a cinema in Cushing was being evacuated due to a gas leak.
Another said there was “significant damage” to downtown.
There were also reports of a power outage.
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission said it and the Oklahoma Geological Survey were investigating after the quake, which struck at 7:44 p.m. and was felt as far away as Iowa, Illinois and Texas.
“The OCC’s Pipeline Safety Department has been in contact with pipeline operators in the Cushing oil storage terminal under state jurisdiction and there have been no immediate reports of any problems,” the commission’s spokesman, Matt Skinner, said in a statement. “The assessment of the infrastructure continues.”
A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of Oklahoma last week, with an epicenter near Pawnee.
Scientists have linked Oklahoma’s sharp increase in earthquakes to the underground disposal of wastewater from oil and gas production.
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission has shut down some disposal wells and ordered a reduction in the amount of wastewater disposed of in others.
Associated Press contributed to this report.
The Supreme Court can't do anything about impeachment proceedings.
Right now, what's likely to stop impeachment proceedings is Paul Ryan. Unlike the Trumpsters, Ryan is a very intelligent man who knows that impeachment will die in the Senate and will make the GOP look as stupid as they are. If Ryan retains the Speakership (likely), he'll do his best to rein in the second-generation teabags.

5.3? Does Oklahoma not build to resist earthquakes at all?

Considering they just blew millions on an ad buy revolving entirely around the emails...
Hell no. Undocumented immigration is down from recent years. It's usually safe to assume that any "news" that only appears on right-wing media is bullshit.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThen why do all these lies about immigrants pouring across our border persist?!
I'm not even an immigrant and I'm really frustrated by all this, so I can't even imagine how they must feel, and how people all over the world who wish they could just get the hell out of whatever hellhole they're stuck in and go somewhere else must feel.
Sorry, I ranted.
Do not obey in advance.![]()
Trust me, a lot of your fellow Americans, me included, are just as pissed off by the BS xenophobia.
On another note, a wall wouldn't even have any major effect on the "problem", since a lot of undocumented immigrants are people who flew into the country on visas and simply let them expire. Ironically, this apparently includes Donald Trump's current wife Melania.

Disgusted, but not surprised

Whenever people say this miss angry Stewart I can tell they've never seen full frontal, sam is dynamite.
If the GOP continues to play obstructionist or tries to impeach clinton we could see the nuclear option in play: aka no more filibusters, simple majority rules in the senate. and maybe even "ya know no where does it say it has to be nine justices..."
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?
