The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

CNN interviewed a few election experts, one of who committed to eating a bug if Trump exceeds even 240 electoral votes.

Call that one a win-win, then?

Although honestly, I can't even quite muster the energy to joke about the possibility at this stage. I'm too frightened to joke properly.

[up]Look; that pollster analyst from CNN puts Clinton on top, Daily Kos puts Clinton on top, even freaking 538 puts Clinton on top. Sure, nothing's set in stone, but I don't think there's that much to be worried about here.

The GOP is doing much better in the Senate races lately though.

And map for the GOP in 2018 is very favorable, enough that they might be able to override Clinton's vetoes, if not go for an impeachment.

We can hope that by 2018 the GOP will have fractured enough that their ability to fight is deminished.

Seriously. The party nearly broke apart over Trump. I actually wonder if any will switch parties.

Also, something just struck me: Clinton has now been investigated twice for her emails, but Trump still hasn't released his tax returns.

O.K, we're about two days from the election. I'm now going to choose my song to play if Drumpf wins, Clinton wins, or there has to be a recount.

If Clinton wins, this song will be played to mock him and because I'll feel like laughing:

If Drumpf wins, the song above will also be played as a sign of the shit the U.S will be diving straight into and because I'll want something to make me laugh.

If there has to be a recount, I'll play this song because that's exactly how it will feel- stressful as fuck!:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5B4drTUy0f4

I wonder if the GOP would risk the immense backlash they would get from a political coup; use an overwhelming Congressional majority to impeach Clinton and Kaine in quick order to get Ryan in the Oval Office...

I doubt it, that would be political suicide and carry the very real possibility of civil war.

As it seems to have been buried by the mountain of creepy the last few pages I should reiterate for anyone just joining us: The FBI has cleared clinton. Again.

Fucking comey, a fifteen point fucking drop and the senate is now a toss up. Hope the news gets some loose leftys out who were planning on staying away.

I'm actually less worried than I was last week when I voted (yeah, got that done, pretty much straight Democratic except I imagine Democrats are more in favor of pot legalization, which I voted against), but still, if Trump does come out on top:

There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.

@Karkat, with trumped up charges and the official procedure. I don't think its particularly likely, but its certainly possible.

Indeed. If the Republicans so flagrantly violate the will of the people after she's been cleared, TWICE, of wrongdoing, there will be rioting at least.

Convicting an impachment case requires a two-thirds majority in the senate. In history we've had two presidents impeached but no convictions and Nixon only escaped impeachment by resigning. The most the GOP can hope to do is tie Clinton up in hearings and smears, especially if the Dems take the Senate.
