The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If something happens to the GOP, the one thing I'm sure it wouldn't be replaced by is a whites-only party. Because failure to appeal to anyone who's not white would be what killed GOP.

What would it be replaced by? Well... a broad coalition of people who don't like Hillary, seems the most likely. I have this idea tossing around in my head about a party designed to appeal to hispanics, since I feel like the Blacks aren't moving from the Dems any time soon.

[up]Correction: Failing to appeal to anyone who's not white, straight, and incredibly conservative minded. Because if they ain't conservative, they ain't getting in, and if they ain't straight, they definitely ain't getting in.

I mean, the Republican party just going away and that being it wouldn't be a good thing.
Oh I know.

Something would need to fill the void in someway. Hopefully in a less insane way but still.
This is why I consider it a good thing because hopefully the GOP replacement would be more sane, though I'm not sure how that would go considering that the radicalized voter segment who support them won't magically disappear.

Re: Trump's voice.

My Political Science professor actually possesses an extremely similar lisp. His lectures are extremely entertaining and extremely easy to follow through however.

FBI examining more fake "leaks" slipped into document dumps by suspected Russian agents. Some less believable than others, like one purporting that Hillary was planting radiological weapons to disrupt voting stations. [lol]

The likely GOP replacement is actually going to be more in line with the religious right, since those beliefs are fairly widespread among the black and Hispanic voterbase; it's just that the racism (including anti-immigration) and anti-welfare positions were just too off-putting for those groups.

The net effect is that a lot of their problematic issues will be dropped, but anti-abortion in particular is going to stick around. You can't have everything, I guess.

Hmm. Which might have the effect of narrowing the racial gap between parties, but widening the gender one. Which could be interesting; if one party came to be defined as the man's party and the other as the woman's party.

There's also the fact that younger voters aren't really latching onto the religious right's positions, especially on LGBT issues (even otherwise conservative young adults tend to be at least moderate on that front).

So, assuming Hilary wins, what do you think the narrative will be, playing up the "historic" vibe or all the "controversies" and how it was neck and neck and such?

Couldn’t Clinton win Nevada to make up for the loss of New Hampshire? Or Florida? Or North Carolina? Well… of course she could. All those states remain highly competitive. The point, as we’ve said before, is just that Clinton’s so-called firewall is not very robust. If you’re only ahead in exactly enough states to win the Electoral College, and you’d lose if any one of them gets away, that’s less of a firewall and more of a rusting, chain-link fence.

I can't take any more of Nate Silver. I want to stop reading 538 because it's only making me anxious, but the trap of that is that his record of accuracy is impressive, and I don't want to be locked out of the loop. He had better be full of shit on this one.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

100% the narrative on Nov. 9th will be. "OMG First Female President! and No Trump!" Nov. 10th and beyond. "You know, Hillary only one because her opponent was Trump. Why didn't she do better?!"

[up][up] He's not saying what will happen, he's saying what might happen. The odds 538 gives are still in Clinton's favor, and I think they've even improved slightly over the past couple of hours.

So it turns out that the Clinton investigation by the FBI was based on Breitbart. What's next, Infowars?

Yeah people need to stop taking Silver's musings on possibilities to be prediction of the future. His action predications currently have Clinton with 66%, 67% and 66% changes to win and an expected margin of victory of 3 points and a total of either 307 electoral votes or 278 electoral votes.

Every single predictor on 538 has Clinton winning the election, so people need to stop acting like Nate Silver is saying Clinton is going to loose.

I also feel it's worth mentioning the effect some place (Vox?) wrote about a few weeks ago: Polls are likely to show a bump for a candidate when people believe their candidate is doing well because they are more likely to respond to polls.

OK, the FBI needs to be purged from the top to bottom. Violators need to be blacklisted, if not jailed.

It's undeniable that Clinton's chances have dropped considerably since the FBI letter. What I figured would be a one point loss or two at max is looking more like three or four and this late in the race I doubt the Clinton has any ammo that could stop that movement or they'd have deployed it already. Unless we see a bombshell like actual physical proof that comey silenced calls about russian meddling we're moving towards a toss up.

To compare to 2012: at this date 538 had obama pegged at 85%, up from a low of 65% in mid-october. Clinton has undergone the exact opposite in their model in the same time span. A few more A list polls drop and we could see her odds go to 60, 55 or lower and then the election is essentially a coin flip.

This isn't necessarily bad. We've been saying for awhile now that complacency is Clinton's biggest problem post debate and this is scary as fuck to anyone who thought they could sit this election out.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?
