The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think that Romney is going to become a third tier candidate. If Gingrich wins Iowa, it probably means he has momentum. If Paul wins Iowa, it means Gingrich doesn't have momentum. Long story short, I think that if Paul wins Iowa, then Romney has a pretty decent shot of getting the nomination.

Is it possible for none of the current candidates to win? Maybe they'll pick someone like Christie at a brokered convention.

We're having another government shutdown?

Once again shit gets stalled because of Senator Harry Reid (D-NV).

Who cares what the final vote would have been, the payroll tax bill passed by the House this week deserved a vote and debate.

Does he honestly think he's getting on voters' (and OWS) good side by being such an idiot and refusing to even put bills to a vote? It's the fucking debt problem in August all over again. (And he was responsible for the final vote being on the deadline for default!)

Actually, didn't he bring it up for a vote and MCCONNEL fillibustered? Something his own party passed?

"To try to push the process along, Mr. Reid tried Wednesday morning to hold a vote on the payroll tax bill that passed the House Tuesday evening — but Mr. Mc Connell blocked that, which left Democrats wondering why he would halt a vote on his party’s own proposal."

Tom, you do realize said payroll tax for the republicans is just a cute way to piggyback a job destroying and environment devastating pipeline into existence, ironically threatening the livelihoods of the very farmers the republicans purport to care so much about..right?

^^ He was saying not two days ago that the House bill was dead on arrival.

I won't defend Mc Connell. He's an idiot and Republicans everywhere know it.

Then I suppose they would have voted against it, had Mc Connel not blocked a bill from his own party.

It was a good bill ruined by that XL Pipeline shit, Tom. It was a dick move that deserved to get shot down. That deal is going to devastate people's homes and lives.

Adding such unnecessary things to waste time and money (seriously wtf do pipelines have to do with payroll taxes?) is one of the dumbest problems with our government.

Midgetsnowman Since: Jan, 2010

Pretty much. I'd prefer government shutdown to the House once again trying to push pet agenda issues by attaching them to unrelated and more important bills and expecting the democrats to bend over and take it in the rear.

Especially since said pipeline if it ever ruptures will absolutely RUIN small business farmers in the midwest.

That deal is going to devastate people's homes and lives.

Care to explain how? Preferably with logical facts and costs?

(Personally I don't know enough about the pipeline proposal to have an opinion on it one way or another.)

I too would be interested in some hard data. It's a valid concern, so long as, once said data is presented, it's not immediately ignored or something.

The pipeline has two major flaws that I know of.

One, its going to be used to transport Tar Sand oil. a method of extracting oil that only just barely makes more energy on output than input. Its like burning 5 trillion tons of coal to get 100.1 Percent power. Add to that that any land you use for Tar sand digging has to basically be strip mined, and we pretty much permanently destroy part of Canada. On top of that, the proposed XL pipeline route goes right down the center of america, ensuring that any leaks or busts that occur drop rich delicious crude oil on arable farmland.

The company trying to build it is bullying people off their homes. (Or at least attempting to.) There's an organization in Nebraska that's formed to protect themselves from that corporation. These are farmers, whose livelihoods pretty much depend on being able to stay on their farms.

The tar sand shit is bad news...

And, yeah, they're really dumb for wanting to run a pipeline through that part of the US. This isn't like Alaska, where there's not a lot of significant economic or tangible value out there...

Oh right. that article reminded me of the other flaw in the pipeline route. It'll run right above a freshwater aquifer used by the entire region. Any pipeline damage ever (and pipelines always take damage, its pretty much inevitable) will potentially pollute an entire aquifer forever.

Anyone who wants the pipeline obviously doesn't care much for the Plains and Midwest...

They do realize we get a lot of our money from those places, correct?

So yeah. Looks like Gingrich is falling a bit in Iowa, and Paul's taking up his speed. Will this finally be the year for Ron Paul? I sincerely doubt it, but who knows!

As for the shuting down...

Its once again the fault of the Republicans. Why? Because they keep insisting on "you either do what we want (loosening enviormental regulations) or we will destroy the country"
