The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I stand corrected. They offered, back during the debt ceiling shit, to soften their stance against it if they brought back DADT.

I found this one, from which I quote:

For Tea Party Founding Fathers chairman William Temple, a reinstatement of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and keeping women out of combat roles would also be acceptable [as a compromise to avoid government default].

I also found one from Daily Kos, but you said not to use that one. I'm not sure what this particular site is, but if I remember correctly this is the article originally linked... in the old debt limit crisis thread, perhaps; it was either there or in this thread, a long time ago.

The Israel policy of all the candidates (except the curiously absent Huntsman) is scary. To become even more overt in our position as bitch than we already are is....oy vey.

And Perry is flubbing, flubbing, flubbing....

Gingrich may be a historian, but only in Medieval Europe. His "historian" credit doesn't hold up for the middle east, and his "invented people" comment is garbage.

Romney totally got screwed by "have you ever had a hardship" question....

Paul did well in same question.

More to come.

Tom has a hate-on for the Daily Kos because its a hive of liberalist scum and villany.

In actuality, its quality is highly variable due to it being much more a collection of news journals, like Livejournal for current events.

To be fair, I give him shit for using heritage foundation, cato, and fox news, so whatever.

I doubt it'll happen, though...

Is there a debate going on tonight? I guess I should check out the political channels on TV or something....

Also, Zeiq, there is nothing sacred or too disturbing to go on the internet. I'll bet you'll find that if you go looking in the right places.

Yeah, it was the ABC debate. Nothing new except Newt got more questions than before and Cain wasn't there to be a dumbass (though neither was Huntsman, which saddens me).

Trump debate would be more interesting since its just going to be Newt and Santorum. This is truely his chance to discredit Newt, assuming Trump doesn't go all birtherism on the candidates.

If Newt were smart — he occasionally shows glimmers of it — he would disregard all of his opponents when choosing his veep. What does he need their votes for?

Perry has no real following (and he sounds downright pathetic these days, with the wild hand gesturing and canned answers), and neither does Romney, when you get down to it.

Just going by the initial reaction to the debate, Gingrich held on fairly well and Romney really shot himself in the foot with that "I bet 10,000 dollars" thing.

Whether or not he said in his book that the Massachusetts healthcare plan he implemented as Governor should be implemented at a national scale if I recall correctly.

Ron Paul was also great in the debate. He attacked Gingrich for his policies, and even got applause for opposing the PATRIOT Act and calling for troop withdrawal.

Perry was... as usual.

Gingrich defended himself well in regards to his infidelity, but got applause when he said that he wanted poor kids to be janitors.

Bachmann also attacked Gingrich and Romney the hardest. She still called them "Newt Romney", though, as if they were one guy.

With Romney, even when he was getting attacked, he kept stepping back and stuttered a lot, without any real retaliation. He had a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment when he said that he wouldn't fund a lunar colony.

I love how this "let's fire the janitors" idea is gaining traction.

Because those damn janitors are driving cadillacs past me every day.

I don't love that that idea is gaining traction. All that means is more cuts to education funding. And more abandonment of the school age kids in poor areas.

[up] The primary voters are viciously far-right on a lot of issues, generally speaking. It's why I'm worried that Gingrich'll win it all, since he actually has supporters. Romney might end up getting the same deal as Howard Dean and Hillary Clinton, but then again, nobody wanted to go with McCain, and he still won the nomination. Ron Paul is also the darkhorse of this race, enough that I think he'll become the prime challenger to Romney and Gingrich. He might even become the nominee.

Cutting the education budget is like cutting off your fingers in an attempt to lose weight.

You lose very little to no 'weight' and all you accomplish is crippling yourself.

But clearly no one gives a shit about education in this country, and yet we have the balls to go "Why are our students failing!? IT MUST BE THE TEACHERS FAULT, MORE CUTS!"

Ugh.

The firing the janitors is a good idea in the sense that it would make students do manual work cleaning their schools.

I am 100% in favour of that idea.

It is cost reduction in education... but the idea is that you cut that, and you dont cut education, so then, there is more money availabe to educate people.

Come on people. This one particular concept is not that hard to grasp. Do I trusth Newt to execute it? No. But it is a fine idea I say.

Because we need students doing manual labor rather than learning how to be successful in our technological society.

Well, I suppose someone has to replace all those fruit and vegetable pickers that we're chasing out of the country.

Re: your edit — you seriously believe that janitorial costs are crippling our school budgets? I... I don't know how to respond to that. "Citation needed" sounds so academic.

YES. We do.

Americans have gotten used to not working with their bare hands. That is some of the best education they can get. And I am not even joking.

Work. Good old fashion Work. They will clean the school in shifts after classes so they wont miss anything.

I also find your comment mildly insulting. Because Americans are too good to do manual work. Lets give all the manual work to us dirty immigrants.

And No I dont. That wasnt my point. But... Per school, they could have some extra cash. It would help-.

I mean. This is what they do in Korea and Japan and I dont need to remind you they have they are both probably the best education systems in the world.

[up]The problem with that idea is that it involves displacing the people already in those jobs. When the country has more workers than jobs the last thing we should do is add more workers.
